Innovations in Cybersecurity Education

The National CyberWatch Center is proud to present its third annual Innovations in Cybersecurity Education booklet. The publication highlights the creative and pioneering ideas of individuals and organizations around the country within one of five categories: Evidence-based Strategies, Instruction, Practice Program Development, and Honorable Mention. Winning submissions include: Pathway to Advancement in Cybersecurity Education (PACE); Thinking Outside the Box - Using Escape Room Games to Interest Teachers and Students in Cybersecurity; Incentive-based Platform for Teaching Cryptocurrency, Bug Bounty, Reconnaissance and More; Three Colleges + Three Degrees = One Successful Cyber Career; and PCI Credit Card Security.

Virtual Brown Bag Lunch Series

The National CyberWatch Center’s Curriculum Standards Panel is calling for presentation proposals for its 2019 Virtual Brown Bag Lunch program. Presentations, in prototype form, highlight or unveil exciting, new innovations in cybersecurity education that include new techniques, tools and executable libraries for instruction, assessment, practice or challenge labs. They should be 20 to 30 minutes followed by a Q&A discussion. Proposals are accepted online only and evaluated on a first-come, first-serve basis until all slots are filled per month.

Peak Cyber Symposium

The Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) Colorado Springs Chapter is hosting the ninth annual Peak Cyber Symposium, Sept. 3-5, at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This symposium is designed to further educate cybersecurity, information management, information technology and communications professionals by providing a platform to explore some of today's most pressing cybersecurity threats, remediation strategies and best practices.

Girls Robotics / Cybersecurity Camp

Getting girls interested and excited about cybersecurity was on full display during the one-week Girls GenCyber Robotics/Cybersecurity camp hosted by Forsyth Technical Community College in North Carolina. The group of sixth- and seventh-grade girls learned to program robots and drones, and work as ethical hackers while having fun. Not only did they learn a lot, but they also increased their awareness and peaked their interest in potential cybersecurity careers.

Podcast Discussion

Techspective’s latest Inner Circle podcast welcomed Georgia Weidman, author of “Penetration Testing; A Hands-On Introduction to Hacking,” founder and CEO of Bulb Security and Shevirah, and National CyberWatch National Visiting Committee (NVC) member. As a leader in cybersecurity, she discussed women in STEM and cybersecurity roles as well as the purpose and value of penetration testing for organizations. She also discussed ups and downs of launching and managing a successful cybersecurity business. She even delved into the need to pursue passions outside of a focused cybersecurity career for balance and mental recharging.

Resources & Opportunities for Faculty

George Washington University’s Cyber Security and Privacy Research Institute is offering new resources to faculty. The Reach to Teach project includes six brief video sessions that dive into an introduction to community colleges, ethics and pedagogy in an attempt to rally working or retired cybersecurity experts to become adjunct instructors. Two workshops also will delve into secure multi-party computation, which allows organizations to collaborate securely, performing joint computations on their private data without revealing inputs to each other. They will learn how to make this computation accessible to students at different levels and incorporate the learned material into community college curriculum.

Get in tip-top shape for NCL’s Fall Season through Pro-Tip Tuesdays from Aug. 6 to Nov. 26. Kaitlyn Bestenheider (@CrytoKait on Twitter), NCL’s chief player ambassador, will walk you through the resources and opportunities for the upcoming season. Each week has a specific focus, which includes topics like scanning, network traffic analysis, and teamwork strategies. Tips will be dropped via blog posts, emails and social media.

Cybersecurity Curricular Guidance

The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Committee for Computing Education in Community Colleges (CCECC) is pleased to report that the second draft of CSEC2Y, Cybersecurity Curricular Guidance for Associate Degree Programs, IronDog, is available for public review and comment. In addition to incorporating feedback from StrawDog, the major update in IronDog is the addition of competencies for each knowledge area. The comment period will close Aug. 15. Input is welcome. Please share this with anyone in your networks who can provide input.

Assisting With Educational Research
