Using Web Comics for Cybersecurity

In the next Virtual Brown Bag Lunch (VBBL), Laurin Buchanan, principal investigator at Secure Decisions, will discuss and demonstrate the use of Comic-BEE, a novel cybersecurity education technology designed to support the rapid creation of interactive, graphic stories (web comics) that align with cybersecurity curricular goals. These web comics can be used for education or evaluation (assessment) of diverse cybersecurity knowledge, skills and abilities. Join this VBBL to explore how graphic storytelling can enable cybersecurity education while also engaging and assessing learners.

Innovations in Cybersecurity Education Award Program

Five winners earned recognition and honors as part of the National CyberWatch Center’s Innovations in Cybersecurity Education awards and recognition program. Awards were designated in four categories: Evidence-based strategies, instruction, practice and program development. The winners included Pathway to Advancement in Cybersecurity Education; Thinking Outside the Box: Using Escape Room Games to Interest Teachers and Students in Cybersecurity; Incentive-Based Platform for Teaching Cryptocurrency, Bug Bounty, Reconnaissance and More; Three Colleges + Three Degrees = One Successful Cyber Career. An honorable mention was also awarded for the submission titled PCI Credit Card Security.

Foundation First – Building the Cybersecurity Structure!

Behzad Izadi from Cypress College (CA) developed an innovation in cybersecurity education that won the 2019 National CyberWatch Center award for evidence-based strategies: Pathway to Advancement in Cybersecurity Education. This project develops and implements a succinct pathway from middle school to a four-year college or university that provides a multifaceted approach to cyber career development to increase graduate success rates.

Curriculum Standards Panel Members Needed

Volunteers are needed to share their security knowledge, skills, and expertise as part of the National CyberWatch Curriculum Standards Panel. The course specific panels identify learning objectives, concepts, procedures, situational judgments and intellective abilities required to develop capability maturity in cybersecurity foundational principles, techniques, tactics and protocols. Panelists can contribute to one or more Topic Areas. Register today!

National CyberWatch Member Update

Anthony B. Hanners, member of the National CyberWatch Center’s Curriculum Standards Panel, was appointed cybersecurity program director and assistant professor at Immaculata University (PA). Prior to his new position, Hanners was cybersecurity program coordinator at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College (WV) and at Hagerstown Community College (MD). He is a certified information systems security professional and member of the Information Systems Security Association as well.
