In recognition of his significant contributions to cybersecurity education, John Sener was awarded the National CyberWatch Center's Pioneer Award on October 7, 2019. Mr. Sener was the National CyberWatch External Evaluator since the Center's inception in 2005.

John Sener's contributions to the field include:
  • Authored the book, “The Seven Futures of American Education: Improving Learning & Teaching in a Screen-Captured World," where he contends that American education has been “cyberized” and thus is inextricably tied to technology. He comments on how the relationship between technology and education prompts society to question the purpose of education, especially with regard to our economy
  • Wrote a number of seminal White Papers: The Role of Student Competitions in Cybersecurity Education; Transfer Pathways In Cybersecurity Education: Challenging Routes, Promising Practices, Possible Improvements
  • Developed the Event-Anchored Learning concept, which is the use of an event to support, or “anchor,” the learning experience. Why is it important? It engages participants, attracts stakeholders, adds value to the entire process, supports all sorts of networking, capacity building, and program improvement activities
