National Day for Truth & Reconciliation |

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The federal statutory holiday, established in 2021, honours those who survived residential schools, those whose lives were lost and those whose suffering and trauma is ongoing.
Until last year, September 30 has been known as Orange Shirt Day, a day for Canadians to raise awareness of the history, harm and legacies of the Canadian residential school system by wearing the colour orange.
The Squamish Public Library has materials for all ages to learn about Indigenous history, including the Indian Residential School experience and the ongoing Truth & Reconciliation process. Below you will find suggested resources.

Honouring Residential School Survivors |

Last September, the Squamish Library hosted Squamish Nation Elders and Residential School survivors who generously shared their stories. Thank you to these three Elders. It was an honour to listen to you:

The Whistler Writers Festival celebrates the art and tradition of oral storytelling featuring the talents of Tanina Williams (Lil’wat Nation) and Tsawaysia Spukwus (Squamish Nation).
Eight local storytellers will share the stage with these two powerhouse keepers of stories and songs indigenous to the shared Lil’wat and Squamish territories.

Helping Hands Volunteer Call: Creative People Needed |

Squamish Helping Hands is looking for volunteers who want to share their personal skills and interests with others at Under One Roof.
This includes activities such as art, music, philosophy, bike maintenance, nature walks, and so on. No idea is too small to share, and you do not have to be an expert to get involved!
Squamish Helping Hands staff will support you by organizing activities and engaging interested residents of Under One Roof to participate. We also have limited grant-funding to assist with supplies.
