Over the past eight months, the Squamish Public Library Board has listened, learned, and reflected on what Reconciliation means for our library and the communities we serve. We deeply appreciate the time and wisdom of the Squamish Nation Elders in reviewing our draft statement; their guidance has helped shape our path forward. With sincere gratitude - especially to Elder TlatlaKwot Christine Baker - we are honoured to share the Board's statement of commitment to Reconciliation.
Library Board Statement on Reconciliation
The Squamish Public Library Board acknowledges with deep respect that the library stands on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). We are committed to honour and celebrate the Squamish Nation history, language and culture.
We strive to ensure that the library is a welcoming space where Squamish Nation members feel represented, respected, and at home. As well, we will provide opportunities for all community members to experience, listen, and learn from the Squamish Nation.
This commitment to reconciliation guides our work, and is part of the process of healing relationships, acknowledging past harms and moving forward together in a respectful manner.
