Detective goes nuts - illegal demand for patient's blood
- The detective didn't have a warrant, first off. And the patient wasn't conscious, so he couldn't give consent. Without that, the detective was barred from collecting blood samples - not just by hospital policy, but by basic constitutional law. (And by agreement in a written policy negotiated between the Police Dept. and Hospital)
Still, Detective Jeff Payne insisted that he be let in to take the blood, saying the nurse would be arrested and charged if she refused.
Nurse Alex Wubbels politely stood her ground. She got her supervisor on the phone so Payne could hear the decision loud and clear. "Sir," said the supervisor, "you're making a huge mistake because you're threatening a nurse."
Payne snapped. He seized hold of the nurse, shoved her out of the building and cuffed her hands behind her back. A bewildered Wubbels screamed "help me" and "you're assaulting me" as the detective forced her into an unmarked car and accused her of interfering with an investigation. Article

It has become commonplace among some "libertarians" to denegrate the North and President Lincoln in particular. We are reminded that at the time no states were being forced to leave the Union or to end slavery. The first shots were by a militia in South Carolina against a Federal Fort. In eny event, we do not want to repeat such a devastating experience.
Can we handle

- Boston University has a medical team that has examined 121 brains of former NFL players. 120 had
CTE
(Chronic traumatic encephalopathy) disease,
often caused by impacts or rattling of the brain. To be sure, they sought victims of early deaths, many suicides and/or with brain problems, memory loss, etc. One was a 22 year old college player. Now, I really, really love football. Not so much the NFL variety any more - millionaires disrespecting the flag and the Country that gave them the chance. The NFL ignored and lied about their own studies for years, tried to buy the BU study with a million dollar grant and $30M to NIH (some of which they pulled back), but they have committed to pay more than a billion dollars to players, wives and wives to settle a suit. The question is, would we encourage our children and grand children to play?

we expect Republicans to adhere to their principles of limited, shrinking government, less taxes, government at the lowest possible level, closest to the people
. If they ran on that ticket it was a promise we expect them to keep.
We might target ANY program or bill or law that automatically increases taxes. Seniors in particular will get it. They do not get cost of living increase in SS, but their taxes and costs of insurance, food, etc. keep going up, squeezing them more.
We will work for prevailing wage repeal, school reforms for more local and parent control and choice, insurance reform, and might target PA51
, but that is a huge hill to climb. Even "conservative" local officials get visions of grandeur or greed when they benefit from a program that takes tax money from neighbors.
PA51 is "revenue sharing", taxing statewide to redistribute the wealth (tax dollars). For example, MDOT gets merely 39% or $468 M out of the $1.2 B in tax increases, if and when any of the fuel tax dollars gets to roads. It steps on local governments and the will of voters who say NO to local tax increases then have them imposed by the State.
Insurance reform is badly needed. Hispitals can triple-dip in billings for medical care. Michigan's auto insurance is by far, the highest in the Nation. Would you be willing to decrease unlimited medical coverage on car insurance in exchange for lower rates? In some cases medical insurance is covered three times in a single incident as workers comp., personal medical insurance, Medicare and Medicaid and auto insurence all might apply. Why pay three or more times for the same coverage? Despite a kitty of more than $14 Billion for catostropjic medical care, our rates went up again last year. MCU will call a Citizens Task Force to evaluate how

The president noted that from the nation's beginning, "Americans have joined together in prayer during times of great need, to ask for God's blessings and guidance."

++ Antifa riots at Berkley: "Police have completely disappeared...People are getting beaten up."
Hundreds of black-clad masked Antifa rioters descended on a park in Berkeley, California, after a "No to Marxism" rally was canceled.
A few people showed up anyway, and were viciously beaten and attacked.
Mainstream media journalists caught in the middle described the Antifa rioters arriving in battle formation armed with shields (which were specifically prohibited under published police rules) and the police appearing to stand down. Journalists who were filming were repeatedly attacked by Antifa.
They were taking phones and cameras and declaring it their park.

++ Southern Christian Poverty Law Center holds more than $300 Million and is sheltering money of shores.
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a liberal, Alabama-based 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization that has gained prominence on the left for its "hate group" designations, pushes millions of dollars to offshore entities as part of its business dealings, records show.
Additionally, the nonprofit pays lucrative six-figure salaries to its top directors and key employees while spending little on legal services despite its stated intent of "fighting hate and bigotry" using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy.
A gunman opened fire at the Washington, D.C., offices of the conservative Family Research Council in 2012 after seeing it listed as an "anti-gay" group on SPLC's website.
The SPLC has turned into a fundraising powerhouse, recording more than $50 million in contributions and $328 million in net assets on its 2015 Form 990, the most recently available tax form from the nonprofit. SPLC's Form 990-T, its business income tax return, from the same year
shows that they have "financial interests" in the Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, and Bermuda...
The SPLC, which claims to boast a staff of 75 lawyers who practice in the area of children's rights, economic justice, immigrant justice, LGBT rights, and criminal justice reform, reported spending only $61,000 on legal services in 2015.

What does it mean for me to be an American?
American history needs to be seen
in the context of a larger drama. But there is sharp disagreement over the way we choose to represent that relationship.
Is, for example, the nation and culture we call the United States to be understood fundamentally as one built upon the extension of European and especially British laws, institutions, and religious beliefs?
Or is it more properly understood as a modern,
Enlightenment-based post-ethnic nation built on acceptance of abstract principles, such as universal individual rights, rather than bonds of shared tradition, race, history, conventions, and language?
Or is it a transnational and multicultural "nation of nations" in which a diversity of subnational or supernational sources of identity-race, class, gender, ethnicity, national origin, sexual practice, etc.-is the main result sought, and only a thin and minimal sense of national culture and obligation is required?
Or is it something else again? And what are the implications of each of those propositions for the answers one gives to the question, "What does it mean for me to be an American?"
