State Updates

A Train-the-Trainer course will take place on Nov. 28-29 , at Springhill Suites, St. Louis Park, through the Minnesota Board on Aging.  Learn more.

A Companion class will take place on Nov. 10, at Northwoods Caregivers

Seven individuals completed a Companion course on Oct. 23,  through Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota.


National Director of REST Lois Sheaffer will be the keynote speaker at a Statewide Respite Conference on Nov. 15, at Florida Atlantic University, Jupiter. The event will bring together caregivers and respite stakeholders from throughout the state to share creative strategies and discuss ways to improve respite care options in Florida. See information.

A Train-the-Trainer course will take place on Jan 31-Feb. 1, in Boynton Beach.

Seven individuals completed a Companion course on Oct. 19 , at Boca Raton Community Center, through Florida Atlantic University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, and Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services.
Twenty individuals completed a Companion course on Oct. 27 , at the Arc of Palm Beach County, Riviera Beach, through the Unicorn Children's Foundation, to increase the availability of high-quality respite care providers in Palm Beach and Broward counties.  See photos here.


In honor of National Family Caregivers Month, Age and Dementia Friendly of Winnemucca and Humboldt County  will present Dementia Friends USA to local businesses and community members, with the goal of gaining new volunteers and increasing understanding of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. "Caregivers are Shining Stars," a caregiver recognition luncheon, will take place on Nov. 14 , at the Atlantis Casino and Hotel, in Reno, through the Nevada Caregivers Coalition. The event will recognize the important role caregivers play in helping their care receivers remain at home. See details here.

A Companion course took place on Oct. 29 , through Age and Dementia Friendly of Winnemucca and Humboldt County. Those who completed the course can now volunteer for WAM (Wellness, Art and Music). The two-hour program takes place twice a month and offers caregivers a break to run errands or head for appointments, while loved ones have an opportunity to engage in fun activities.

The seventh annual "Straight from the Heart" event took place on Nov. 1, in Henderson, to benefit Nevada Senior Services, which operates adult day care centers in Las Vegas and Henderson. The evening included hors d' oeuvres, an award presentation and entertainment. See details.

The fifth annual Alzheimer's Awareness Turkey Trot will take place on Nov. 22 , in Winnemucca, to raise funds for local respite care and education. See information.

  New York
The REST program was featured in "The Future of Family Caregiving: LEADING THE CHANGE," a new publication of AARP New York . Participants featured best practices and new models, and offered insights on how New York State could adapt successful approaches to supporting caregivers. Learn more.

A Train-the-Trainer event will take place on Nov. 29-30, in Kingston.

A "Caring for the Caregiver" Retreat will take place on Nov. 17 , at Celebrate Family Church, Leicester. The event, specifically for caregivers of those living with Alzheimer's, dementia or other chronic health conditions, will include lunch, community vendors, door prizes, and more. See details.

The Oneida County Office for the Aging/Continuing Care, and the Community Elderwellness Council will honor three caregivers , each from the category of professional, informal and community leader, on Nov. 8, at the annual Celebrating Life event, in honor of National Family Caregivers Month. The 14th Annual Dutchess County Caregivers Conference will take place on Nov. 16 , at the Grandview, Poughkeepsie, to commemorate National Family Caregivers Month. Themed, "Caregiving - a Highwire Act," the conference will feature discussions on asset protection, Medicare and Medicaid, navigating the healthcare system and scam prevention. See information.


Twelve individuals completed a Train-the-Trainer course on Oct. 16-17 , which was offered through the Colorado Respite Coalition and held at Daniels Fund, Denver. See photo here.


The REST Program received a $15,000 grant from the Bloomingdale Township Mental Health Board  to create a pilot volunteer respite care program in the township that can serve caregivers of seniors, individuals with developmental disabilities, and those with mental illness. Voice of Care and Lutheran Church Charities Disaster Response ministry are in the process of designing a Lutheran Early Response Teams class , which will train Companions for deployment to disaster areas. They can coordinate respite events in host churches to care for people with disabilities as their loved ones arrange for assistance they need during the crisis.

Thanks to a grant from the Northern Illinois District of Lutheran Women in Mission, Voice of Care will be able to customize REST training for faith-based communities . This will be especially important as Voice of Care develops Companions and Trainers across the U.S. Currently, Voice of Care is working with Pinnacle Lutheran Church in Rochester, N.Y., where three Trainers are piloting Voice of Care's distance learning for respite volunteers. Nine individuals completed a REST Essentials course in October , in Boston, through the Commission on Affairs of the Elderly.


A two-part Companion course will take place on Nov. 29 and Dec. 6 , in Escanaba, through Upper Peninsula Commission on Area Progress (UPCAP). See details.

A Companion course took place on Oct. 23 , at Marquette County Health Department, in Negaunee, through UPCAP.


The 17th annual Maui Family Caregivers Conference will take place on Nov. 16 , at the Grand Wailea Ballroom, in honor of National Family Caregivers Month. The event will include speakers, networking opportunities, and more than 30 exhibitors. Learn more.


A Caregiver Appreciation Event will take place on Nov. 15 , at Brookwood Baptist Church, Birmingham, to commemorate National Family Caregivers Month. Alabama Lifespan Respite Resource Network, the Birmingham Area Sharing the Care Group and the ALS Association Alabama Chapter will host the event, which includes a painting class, yoga demonstration, and other activities for caregivers. "Thanks for Caring" will take place on Nov. 2 , at Brookdale Jones Farm, Huntsville, in honor of National Family Caregivers Month. See event details here.


A screening of the award-winning documentary, "I Am a Caregiver," will take place on Nov. 10 , at Church of Christ, Memphis, in honor of National Family Caregivers Month. The film addresses the challenges and sacrifices faced by non-paid family caregivers. A brief Q & A session will take place following the screening with filmmaker Kathy O. Lofton. Washington, D.C.

Congressional Stories of Family Caregiving will take place on Nov. 7 , at the Reserve Officers Association, in Washington, D.C. The lunch briefing will highlight caregiving stories, including those of congressional members, in an effort to raise awareness of the need for action to support and assist family caregivers. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services will take nominations through Nov. 12 , for the 2018 Caregiver of the Year award, which honors an outstanding caregiver in the state. See more information.


"Family Caregivers Rock" will take place on Nov. 4, at the Grand Meridian, Appleton, to commemorate National Family Caregivers Month. The event will feature refreshments, activities, entertainment, motivational speakers and prizes. Learn more.
