August 6- 12 is National Farmers Market Week

Celebrate with us at the market!

Charlottesville, Albemarle, and central VA residents love their farmers markets, supporting four Charlottesville Markets, and 4 Albemarle markets. The Farmers Market at Ix (Saturday morning) and Sunset Farmers Market at Ix (Thursday evenings) are the newcomers on the block, co-founded by Market Central and the Ix Art Park in 2018 as the area's first winter market, and first market hosted and managed by independent non-profit organizations. During COVID, we opened year-round to sustain farmers, prepared food operations, and local artists.



Our market is attuned to the responsibilities to the environment, to equitable access to food and business development, and to the community. Markets are good for communities in so many ways.!

In collaboration with Bread and Roses community kitchen, Market Central was awarded a grant from the Virginia Food Access Investment Fund of $50,000 to develop food businesses and increase access to fresh food in Charlottesville. What does that look like?

Come find out! In September, there will be a community social where both non-profits will share how we can help people start a food business, access local food and start new markets in Charlottesville. Local vendors will share their lived experiences and some of their delicious food! Dates for workshops on small business development and food safety (ServSafe) will be announced as well. Keep up to date via Facebook at Just Food, Just Economy or on our website.

Market Central's commitment to developing environmentally responsible practices has been recognized by the Southern Environmental Law Center. SELC is our Greening the Market 2023 sponsor! The program provides free reusable bags to customers, rewards for bringing reusable containers, and customer and vendor composting through Black Bear composting. Funding by Bama Works Fund of the Dave Matthews Band also supports composting operations, education and and improvements to decrease the negative environmental impacts of trash generated at the market.

SNAP & Fresh Match

Market Central accepts SNAP at the Saturday Market, and matches up to $50 of your SNAP for fresh produce with Fresh Match!

USDA SNAP benefits used to purchase eligible food are matched with Virginia Fresh Match incentive coupons for free fruits, vegetables, edible plants and seeds. To strengthen equitable food access, Market Central was awarded a $5,000 Sentara Cares grant to help with program implementation, management, and community outreach. Our purpose is to provide more local and regional SNAP enrollees the option to access fresh, healthy food grown in their own community, supporting local farms and the local economy.
