 NGCP Updates:
Design Squad Global (DSG) Clubs are connecting kids (ages 10-13) in out-of-school-time programs around the world. Kids explore engineering through fun-packed, high-energy, hands-on activities that tackle real-world issues and they do so by working alongside a DSG Club from another country. In the process of sharing their ideas and exchanging feedback with their partner club, children develop "global competency" and the ability to communicate and collaborate with people from different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. Since October 2016,
 200+ Clubs in 18 countries have participated in the global experience. To learn more, watch the

APEC Women in STEM: A Framework for Dialogue, Learning, and Action
In June 2016, NGCP was pleased to be a part of a workshop in Lima, Peru entitled, "APEC Women in STEM: Expanding Opportunity and Innovation by Strengthening the Presence of Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math." The panel on which NGCP participated contributed to some of the overall themes of the final report which has been endorsed by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy. The report provides an 'APEC Women in STEM Framework' that organizes challenges and opportunities across four key issues: enabling environment; education; employment; and entrepreneurship. SciGirls SD Squared Educator Workshop
Annandale, VA; February 11, 2017
SciGirls is a PBS Kids television series out to change how tweens think about STEM. Educators working with 4th-8th grade students are invited to learn how to integrate inquiry-based STEM instruction with a commitment to gender equity. Participants will learn the latest research for exciting and engaging girls (and boys) in STEM, experience hands-on STEM activities, and gain access to free materials for hands-on, video-enhanced activities that put a creative twist on teaching STEM. SciGirls STEM Training hosted by Chicago Project Exploration

Chicago educators and volunteers who work with middle and high school girls are invited to participate in this hands-on, minds-on professional development training. Participants will learn the latest research for exciting and engaging girls (and boys) in STEM, experience hands-on STEM activities by building a device to measure wind speed and lighting up a room with dough creatures, receive curriculum that puts a creative twist on teaching STEM, learn how to modify activities to engage kids in STEM using the SciGirls Seven and discover additional online resources that enhance teaching and learning experiences for all kids. Habitat Connections: Cornell Lab of Ornithology Birdsleuth Professional Development Workshop

BirdSleuth aims to help all types of educators build science skills while inspiring young people to connect to local habitats, explore biodiversity, and engage in citizen science projects. Pre-service, classroom, afterschool, and informal educators are welcome to participate. This workshop will provide training and educational resources to engage children (ages 8-13) in inquiry-based STEM activities. The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) is dedicated to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults for a wide range of high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand careers. This year's theme is "Forging New Paths." Attendees will gain insights on the new Congress and Administration, hear updates and projections on CTE-related policy initiatives, legislation, and funding via keynote speakers, policy breakout sessions, and opportunities to network with policymakers. Six Strategies for Creating Community of Practice. Session participants will learn ways to increase the capacity and impact of their programs and will receive strategies for creating an effective Community of Practice.

National Summit for Educational Equity (NSEE)

The Connectory Spotlight highlights programs and opportunities in
The Connectory. The Connectory is a free online collaboration tool for STEM program providers to find partners based on interests as well as a platform to showcase STEM opportunities to families. In recognition of African American History Month, we are highlighting the
National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and its pre-college initiative,
NSBE Jr.
NSBE is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the U.S., with nearly 16,000 active members. Founded in 1975, it supports and promotes the aspirations of black students
 and technical professionals in engineering and technology.
NSBE Jr. encourages minority scholars in grades K-12 to attend college and pursue technical degrees.
 There are 82 active NSBE Jr. chapters. Currently, the
East Bay Chapter of NSBE Jr. program is running a
Build a Drone Technical Challenge where students must design, build, and test drones that will deliver supplies to a disaster area on a stranded island.
NSBE just launched the
#BlackSTEMLikeMe: A Reflection of Black Excellence campaign to celebrate African American History Month, Engineers Week, and the Oscar-nominated movie
Hidden Figures. The campaign is NSBE's latest effort to support its goal to graduate 10,000 African-American engineers annually, with bachelor's degrees, by 2025.

African American History Month: In recognition of African American History Month, resources that serve to promote African American students in STEM are highlighted below:
 Black Girls Code is designed to
increase the numbers of young women of color in the field of digital and computer technology by providing skills, exposing them to technology role models, and increasing self-confidence to become tech creators and entrepreneurs.
Black Women and Girls in Computing Roundtable.
An executive brief from NCWIT. The goal of the Roundtable was to connect black women and girls in computing with related organizations in tech, education, government, policy, and media to discuss influence, intersectionality, and media messaging, emerging with a commitment to sustain the community of black women and girls through tangible resources and actions.
The Black Inventor Online Museum. Focuses on the ingenuity and accomplishment of the top black inventors over the last 300 years. Inventors are profiled with a section dedicated to
female inventors.
Science NetLinks has developed a
number of resources that help honor the achievements and scientific work of African Americans.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science recognizes the critical role women and girls play in science and technology communities. The 2017 theme is "Gender, Science and Sustainable Development: The Impact of Media" and will explore ways to promote knowledge about and support for women and girls in science while investigating ways to ensure that women and girls in science are perceived with dignity and recognized for their abilities. Girl Day: Introduce a Girl to Engineering

Girl Day is a worldwide campaign to introduce girls to the fascinating world of engineering. Engineers, teachers and others act as Role Models and educate girls about how engineers change our world.
