 NGCP Updates:
New West Virginia Collaborative
The NGCP is pleased to announce a new Collaborative in West Virginia. The
West Virginia Girls Collaborative Project's convening organization is the
West Virginia Statewide Afterschool Network in Charleston. We are looking forward to highlighting the programs serving girls in STEM across the state of West Virginia! The NGCP
 continues to grow our Collaborative network in 41 states, facilitating collaboration between 22,800 organizations serving 16 million girls (and 8.5 million boys) by training their program leaders in the philosophy, knowledge, and methods of NGCP.

National Mentoring Month Webinar: Utilizing Mentorship to Empower Girls in STEM
January 31, 2017; 11:00 AM Pacific (2:00 PM Eastern)
NGCP is celebrating National Mentoring Month by highlighting the importance of role models and mentors in empowering girls and young women to actively pursue STEM education and careers. During this one hour webinar we will discuss exemplary practices with Techbridge, learn of  SciGirls resources around mentorship, and hear from FabFems about their experiences mentoring young girls. Participants will discuss methods for promoting mentoring that works to inspire girls to pursue STEM.
Research Consortia Student Survey
In collaboration with Destination Imagination, Inc., the National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity, and the Educational Research Center of America, high school STEM teachers will be receiving surveys this month on their students' STEM career aspirations. You are encourage to help notify high schools about this survey, and if you are at a school that receives the survey, you are encouraged to participate. If you want to make sure the survey is sent to your school fill out the Research Consortia Survey Form Request. Thank you for your involvement!

SciGirls Professional Development Training for Curious Minds, LLC
Bloomington, MN; January 7, 2017
Local educators are invited to participate in this free, hands-on, minds-on professional development training. Participants will learn the latest research for exciting and engaging girls (and boys) in STEM, experience hands-on STEM activities, leave with curriculum that puts a creative twist on teaching STEM, and discover additional online resources that enhance teaching and learning experiences for all kids. SciGirls Educator Training at WSKG Public Media
Vestal, NY; January 16, 2017
Participants will learn how to engage students in STEM through PBS Kids SciGirls. SciGirls Training integrates inquiry-based STEM instruction with a commitment to gender equity. Educators (working with 4th-8th grade students) are invited to attend. Participants will learn the latest research for exciting and engaging girls (and boys) in STEM, experience hands-on STEM activities, and gain access to free materials for hands-on, video-enhanced activities that put a creative twist on teaching STEM. Celebrating Inclusive Excellence in STEM
Tucson, AZ; January 20, 2017
This conference will highlight how to ignite curiosity in diverse learners through STEM integration. Attendees will learn about collaborative opportunities between students and their community as well as methods for engaging low represented populations. Nationally recognized programs will be highlighted including bilingual curriculum and web-based programs connected to science standards. Networking exercises and research-based resources are designed to connect you to desired outcomes. Registration deadline is January 18, 2017. Register.
The Works SciGirls Training
Bloomington, MN; January 28, 2017
SciGirls is an Emmy-award winning PBS Kids television series and website dedicated to changing the way millions of girls think about STEM. Educators are invited to participate in this hands-on, minds-on Professional Development Training hosted by The Works in Bloomington, MN. Participants will practice proven strategies for engaging girls in STEM while building a device to measure wind speed, lighting up a room with dough creatures, and learning the latest research for exciting and engaging girls (and boys) in STEM. SciGirls SD Squared Educator Workshop
Annandale, VA; February 11, 2017

Habitat Connections: Cornell Lab of Ornithology Birdsleuth Professional Development Workshop
Rosman, NC; March 18, 2017
BirdSleuth aims to help all types of educators build science skills while inspiring young people to connect to local habitats, explore biodiversity, and engage in citizen science projects. Pre-service, classroom, afterschool, and informal educators are welcome to participate. This workshop will provide training and educational resources to engage children (ages 8-13) in inquiry-based STEM activities. No matter your location or program space, BirdSleuth can help you connect the kids you work with to fun and engaging citizen science projects and inquiry-based outdoor experiences. The Connectory Spotlight highlights programs and opportunities in
The Connectory. The Connectory is a free online collaboration tool for STEM program providers to find partners based on interests as well as a platform to showcase STEM opportunities to families. In recognition of National Mentoring Month, we are highlighting
Girls in STEM @ Keystone Science School.
Keystone Science School believes that curiosity and critical thinking have the power to change lives. The program does this by empowering girls to ask questions, develop solutions, dream big, and to embrace challenges that can be the next big thing! The program dives even deeper by exploring not only the STEM concepts in an empowering girls-only environment, but also by highlighting real women currently working in STEM careers.
A key element of the program is a teaching technique called positive growth feedback in which "failure" is viewed as a necessary and even welcome step on the path to success. Research has shown that girls are especially receptive to this teaching technique, and the scientific method is the ideal process for applying this technique to valuable learning.
On select Saturdays throughout the year, Keystone Science School offers a day program for elementary and middle school girls to meet and work side by side with STEM mentors. Here are the school's next two opportunities.
Build-a-Thon: In February, girls (grades 3-5) will have a chance to experience Architectural and Structural Engineering. They will work in teams to explore the engineering design process through building. They will also be exposed to potential careers and work side by side with female professionals as mentors.
Maximizing Momentum: In April, girls (grades 3-7) will discover the marvels of physics and math. They will work in small groups posed to solve challenges. They will make new friends, meet female mentors and participate in fun and engaging hands-on activities.

January is National Mentoring Month
National Mentoring Month focuses national attention on the need for mentors to guide our youth. Research shows girls benefit from relationships with role models and mentors who can provide valuable information about STEM careers.
 FabFems
A collection of resources for role models, educators, and parents to inspire and educate girls about science, computer science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses and careers. The website includes Resources for Role Models and Resources for Girls.
NCWIT's Mentoring-in-a-Box: Technical Women at Work
The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) developed this resource in collaboration with the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology to help women excel in the technical professions and advance to positions of leadership.
 SciGirls Role Model Strategies
SciGirls Role Model Strategies: Encouraging Girls to Consider STEM Careers offers basic training for role models, introducing them to best practices for their volunteer efforts.
Techbridge
 Role Model Training and Resources are available to help develop skills to engage girls and underrepresented youth in STEM through guides, videos, and questions.

Technovation 2017
Technovation offers girls around the world the opportunity to learn the skills they need to emerge as tech entrepreneurs and leaders. Each year girls are invited to identify a problem in their community, and then challenged to solve it. Girls work in teams to build both a mobile app and a business plan to launch that app, supported by mentors and guided by curriculum. The program culminates in a World Pitch event, August 7-11, 2017, where regional finalists compete to win funding for their app. Registration closes March 8, 2017. Register.
