Stossel Creek

A Forest Planted for the Future

The Mountains to Sound Greenway NHA (Washington) and partners have been working together on a conservation and habitat restoration project for threatened species that utilizes an innovative approach to planting trees adapted to future climates. The partnership conserved 154 acres of habitat along Stossel Creek, an important stream for Steelhead within the Mountains to Sound Greenway NHA in western Washington, and planted more than 14,000 trees from more southernly regions.

Pollinator Projects Sequester Carbon

NHAs and their partners engaged in pollinator habitat restoration are helping sequester carbon, which typically contributes to climate change. Native pollinator gardens help foster healthy soil, which sequesters—or captures and stores—carbon dioxide gas.

Three years ago, three Midwestern NHAs (Northern Plains, Abraham Lincoln, and Motor Cities) adopted Operation Pollination—an inclusive project that helps coordinate disparate pollinator advocacy groups, with native plant gardens. Since then, NHAs across the country have joined in this effort.

Risings & Tidings

at Atchafalaya

Changing waterways, human intervention and climate change have all contributed to land loss along Louisiana’s coast. The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, LA is working with the Bayou Culture Collaborative and Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority to ensure communities and cultures are not washed away with the shoreline.

Protecting culture requires an understanding of history, ecology, arts, and social sciences. This knowledge of how culture and environment are intertwined has informed how decisions are made about preserving coastal Louisiana in the face of a changing climate.

Climate Change Communication Series:

Dr. Gillian Bowser, Former NPS Research Scientist

“It's so important to me that we connect all people to parks because everybody needs to want to protect parks regardless of whether they visited or not, or what racial or ethnic demographic they come from, because it's such an important part of our ecosystem because it's protected. Are you familiar with the Six Americas report? One of the questions that they ask is this issue of climate action. Does climate change impact you personally? And most Americans still answer no. So then the question is, what climate action have you done? And most people put it in that sort of distinct third person, fourth person sense like, well, you know, maybe I'll eat less meat and that's my action. Maybe I'll think about that. Because they don't think that climate change impacts them. It's not their problem. It's somebody else's problem. I think that’s the message we want to challenge. We want people to do something and be active and be part of the solution."

The Power of Graphic Communication

Economic impact at a glance for NPS.jpg

The North Woods and Waters of the St. Croix Heritage Area, an “emerging” National Heritage Area in Minnesota and Wisconsin seeking National Heritage Area designation, partnered with the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management to conduct an economic study of the projected impacts of National Heritage Area designation on the St. Croix River watershed. Masters level students along with their advisors from the Carlson Consulting Enterprise worked intensively over four months to create the methodology, gather and interpret data, and present their results. The graphic above summarizes their findings in a clear and concise visual product.
