National Newsletter - Fall 2017

We are approaching my favorite holiday - Thanksgiving.  This holiday doesn't require us to spend a lot of money buying gifts.  It doesn't ask us to examine our shortcomings.  Thanksgiving doesn't need masks and playful costumes (though they are kinda fun!).  Thanksgiving is simple - it's a time to give thanks.

If there is one obligation related to Thanksgiving, it might be to distance ourselves from our day-to-day lives and appreciate all that we have.  As members of TTN, we are already receiving the gift of community, friendship, access to learning and the ability to build a meaningful life.  Even more, we have the opportunity, through our associations with other smart, experienced, and dedicated women, to have a broader impact.

We are currently preparing for our 2017 Annual Appeal.  Our research reveals that our members are very involved in volunteer activities - both inside and outside TTN.  We currently have 126 chapter leaders who serve on steering committees and manage the day-to-day tasks of welcoming new members, planning and delivering outstanding programs and activities , and overseeing transition peer groups and special interest groups. In addition, there are many, many more women who serve on committees.  That's IMPACT!

I recently counted 32 community organizations that benefit from the time and talent of our members.  And that's only the ones I could find on our website.  I'm sure there are many others who benefit from the generosity of our members throughout the year.  That's IMPACT!

So when I think of Thanksgiving, I of course immediately think of how grateful I am for my incredible family and close friends.  They are the rocks that form the solid foundation on which I stand.  I am also very grateful for all the women of TTN who give of themselves to help others - other TTN members and even more important, those in our communities who need what we give.  That's the greatest gift of all.

TTN connects women so they can discover their impact.  Thank you for yours!

TTN's New "Breaking Free" Group for National Members

Meredith, Susan, Barbara, Marcia, Margaret, Debbie (Jeri and Caren, not pictured)

Women are attracted to TTN from all over the country - not just in the cities and towns where we have chapters.  These members are our "National" members and they are also seeking community and support as they navigate their own transitions.

A few weeks ago, we launched our first  Breaking Free Group - sort of a "virtual Transition Peer Group."  We meet ever other week for 7 weeks via video conference.  Using TTN's book,
Smart Women Don't Retire, They Break Free as our guide, we talk, listen, learn and laugh - just like we do in the TPGs in our chapters.  This group is facilitated by  Meredith Betz , who comes prepared each session to ensure that we speak up and share our perspectives, though it's not too difficult to get this group to engage.

I attended the first session to welcome the participants (not all of whom are pictured above) but I loved this group so much, I decided to stay.  We've have some wonderful discussions on the topics of life and I look forward to every session.

The members in this group are from all over - Southern California, Connecticut, Florida, Texas and northern New York - and are in our 50's, 60's and 70's.  A true TTN group!

We will schedule another group for our National Members to begin after the first of the year so stay tuned if you want to join the next  Breaking Free Group !
Long Island Appreciates Our Volunteers

It's nice to be recognized, and on Thursday, September 7, the Long Island Chapter Steering Committee expressed its appreciation to the many volunteers who are the "glue" that keep our chapter humming.  The volunteers who offer their ideas and their time represent a committed and dedicated group of TTN women. They were treated to a celebratory lunch at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage where, in addition to the good company and great food, they were entertained by the comedienne, Sherry Davey.

I think everyone in leadership in TTN deserves our appreciation and respect.  Without them, we would not have the wonderful community that we have.  Well done, Long Island and thank you for reminding us all to say "thank you!"
United Nations International Day of Older Persons

Yes, there is such a day!

On December 16, 1991, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted its "Principles for Older Persons."  As I read through the resolution, I thought about how much in alignment TTN is with these fundamental principles of respect, dignity and care.  Click here to read the Resolution.

This year, several of us were honored to attend the 27th anniversary of this special day. The topic was "Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents and Participation of Older Persons."  As members of TTN, we certainly can relate to this as a worthwhile focus.  Marc Freedman , the founder of Encore.org was the keynote speaker and as always, brought a committed yet joyous perspective to the topic. Marc's talk begins at 1:07:00 but you can watch the all the speakers  YouTube .

Speaking of Marc Freedman...
TTN ED Susan Collins and Encore.org founder Marc Freedman at 2017 Purpose Prize Ceremony.

There is no more inspirational event than the ceremony to honor the winners of the recipients of the annual Purpose Prize.  Originally founded by Marc's organization, Encore.org, the annual celebration of individuals who have an idea and change lives, is now sponsored by AARP.   Nancy Gendimenico and I had the pleasure of attending this year's event in Chicago.

Encore continues to celebrate individuals and organizations through its Generation to Generation initiative that "seeks new ways to bring more people over 50 into the lives of young people who need champions."  I was thrilled to be chosen as a mentor to one of the contestants  Parkin-A-Punch , an organization that matches adults with
Parkinson's  with young boxers - a relationship that benefits everyone.  Everyone associated with these organizations is a winner!
A Special Incentive to Give
on Giving Tuesday

Our 2017 Annual Appeal will kick off on Tuesday, November 28 - Giving Tuesday. It's a great day to make that donation to TTN that you've been waiting all year to make!

This year, the first 50 donors who contribute $50 or more will receive our very popular TTN Gift Bag. I happen to love this bag and use it to carry all my phone and computer cords when I travel. I've actually had people remark on what a great idea it is and then enjoy reading all the qualities that perfectly describe the TTN Woman.

Of course, you don't have to wait until Giving Tuesday to earn your gift. Donate to our annual appeal now and we will get your gift in the mail right away!

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
