Senior Nutrition

As we get older, our caloric and nutritional requirements change. With so many food options out there what should seniors eat? To recognize March as National Nutrition Month, we are providing a look at how our food choices can affect our bodies, especially in seniors.

Pro Action provides Senior Nutrition programs in partnership with Steuben and Yates County Offices for the Aging. These programs offer solutions for people who have limited ability to leave the house as well as those who are more mobile. Senior Nutrition services include Home Delivered Meals to residents throughout Steuben and Yates Counties, with each meal providing 1/3 of the Recommended Daily Allowance of important nutrients. Whether it be in the comfort of theirown home or with other seniors at one of our Congregate Meal Sites , we encourage seniors to enjoy healthy and nutritious meals. e-WIC System Update
Pro Action’s Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC) is pleased to share that we have successfully transitioned to e-WIC cards at all of our clinic sites in Steuben County. Instead of paper checks being issued to participants, food packages are now loaded onto an e-WIC account. Recipients are able to purchase items using an e-WIC debit card at participating supermarkets. By implementing these changes, our WIC program is able to more effectively reduce the stress of food insecurity for eligible families, while also providing nutrition education and guidance.

Nutrition Outreach and Education Program

Since 1987, Hunger Solutions New York oversees NOEP Coordinators (Nutrition Outreach and Education Program) in almost every County throughout New York State and all boroughs of New York City.

Through NOEP's community-based work, tens of thousands of new households apply for and receive nutrition assistance every year.

Pro Action is proud to provide Yates County with NOEP Coordinator Ashton Dillon, who can be reached by calling the Yates County Office for the Aging at: 315-536-3315, or via email at DillonA@proactioninc.org

Poverty Education
Separating the Myths and Facts
Myth: People receiving food stamps (SNAP) should cut back and budget better so they won't depend on the system.

Fact: For people in poverty who don't know where their next meal is going to come from, there is nothing left to cut back. Low-income households are constantly prioritizing the money they do have. Households in the lowest income bracket spend 15.4% of their income on food, while those in the highest spend 11%. SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as Food Stamps) allows families to use some of that food budget to pay for other basic needs such as rent, medication, child's school supplies, or emergency situations.

An important part of Pro Action's work is to build knowledge and understanding of the causes and conditions of poverty. Visit our website to learn more about how Pro Action is building a deeper understanding about the experience of poverty.
