Q & A with Amit Grover, MD
2019 NPF Grant Recipient
In 280 twitter characters, tell us who you are.
I am the Director of the Pancreatic Disorders Program at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) and an Instructor at Harvard Medical School. I work with a great team here at BCH, where we see all children who have diseases of the pancreas including acute or chronic pancreatitis.
In layman's terms, what is your grant project about?
The purpose of my grant is to determine if we can provide better pain therapies for attacks of acute pancreatitis without using opioids; whose side effects can be quite severe if taken for a long time.
How did you think of this project? Where did the need stem from?
Having taken care of so many children with pain in acute pancreatitis, I was curious if we were giving too much opioid therapy. There is a current epidemic on opioid use and it’s addiction problems. We studied opioid use in children coming to our hospital’s ER and found that we do give a lot of opioids; which prompted the question, can we find other alternatives that will control a child’s pain equally well without exposing them to as much opioid medication.
Why do you think it's important?
Unfortunately there is currently an epidemic of opioid addiction in the United States. Most often patients develop this problem after being exposed to opioids when in the hospital. If we can lessen the use of opioids, it is my hope that we can help decrease the burden of addiction our society is currently facing.
What advice would you give young investigators/researchers who are looking to get started and have their research funded?
Look to your mentors and discover the questions you think are important. When applying for grant funding, I think the moral of the story is perseverance and not giving up. I’ve applied to many grants before, and have been rejected multiple times. Each time though, I have learned from the experience, adjusted and critiqued my grant application and refined it. Eventually you will get funded and you’ll be ready for the next application!
