National Philanthropy Day Honors Four Philanthropy-Minded Gables Residents
The 28th annual National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon, sponsored by TIAA-CREF, was held on Sunday, November 24th at Jungle Island. Among those honored were Gables residents Bruce and Tracey Berkowitz (pictured with Sergio Gonzalez of UM who nominated them) | Outstanding Philanthropists Award, and Jorge Luis and Marile Lopez | Outstanding Volunteer Award.
Started in 1985 by the Miami Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, this event was supported by 600 attendees, and worldwide, more than 50,000 people participate in 130 countries. The emcee was CBS4 News Anchor Cynthia Demos, and the event was chaired by the Foundation's Executive Committee Secretary and Board Member Karelia "Kare" Martinez Carbonell (also a Gables resident).
"Each year, the community gathers to recognize and celebrate the who's who of Miami philanthropy and pay tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy has made to our lives, our community and the world," said Kare. Congratulations to all the Honorees, and to Kare for the success of this inspiring event.

FOCUS ON FUNDS
Created to support the arts and music in our community, the Symphonettes organization continues to do just that. Made up of high school volunteers, this community service organization started off their year with a raffle for their fall fundraiser. The lucky ticket holders will win a Royal Caribbean cruise, floor seats to a Miami Heat game or a set of Romero Britto luggage.
Mindful of the musical needs of local public high schools, President Julie Goldstein and fall fundraiser chairs Carolina Garrett and Katie Hanley became aware that the Coral Gables Senior High Choir needed risers. Recently the group presented a check to Mary G. Morrow, Director of Choral Activities Academy Leader, Visual & Performing Arts Academy, and her students in the amount of $2,100, which will fund two sets of risers.
"We are so grateful for the generous donation that the Symphonettes have given to the chorus program at Coral Gables High School. It will go a long way towards providing more opportunities for successful performances at Coral Gables High School," said Morrow.
The remaining proceeds will also benefit public high school music needs. For more information on the Symphonettes or to contribute to their fall fundraiser, contact Foundation Executive Director Andria Hanley at 305-446-9670.
About Symphonettes Symphonettes has a rich history of almost 50 years of dedication and service. Since the founding in 1966, young women from across the county have spent many hours in volunteer work to promote the arts and music in our community.
The Coral Gables Community Foundation serves as the fiscal sponsor of Symphonettes allowing the group to function as a nonprofit organization and enhance the lives of the people in our community.

MERRICK SOCIETY
City Founder George Merrick's vision for Coral Gables was one of lasting beauty. The historic homes built in the 1920s stand today as enduring reminders of the fulfillment of a vision and passion for aesthetics of one very special dreamer. This historic home at 803 North Greenway Drive was featured in our 2012 TOUR of KITCHENS and is largely unchanged and every bit as charming! We hope you will join us on this year's Tour, and dream of ways you can fulfill your legacy with our Merrick Society.
