College Students Likely to be Spared Deep Cut in State Grant Awards; Some May Even See An Increase

College students who depend on the state grant program to help them cover their tuition and related bills can breathe a tentative sigh of relief. The state grant program looks like it will be spared the deep funding cuts that had been forecasted for it. The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency board on Thursday approved a formula that would maintain the maximum grant award at $4,123 for a third consecutive year assuming state funding proposed for the program comes through. When combined with the maximum federal Pell grant for 2019-20 of $6,195, that would provide a significant amount of financial aid that does not have to be repaid to help students cover their cost of attendance. "We're really giving those students and families opportunities," said Rep. Mike Peifer, R-Pike County.
