April is National Volunteer Month, a time to celebrate the people who bring passion, dedication, and heart to the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum. These individuals generously give their time, energy, and expertise to preserve our maritime legacy and share it with visitors worldwide.

Whether they are supporting educational programs, conducting tours, or simply offer a friendly conversation, our volunteers play a vital role in the museum’s everyday activities. Their varied backgrounds—from veterans and military families to students and history enthusiasts—provide distinct viewpoints that enhance the experience for every visitor.

Kama‘aina Sunday Event at Museum

Thanks to everyone who came out for our Kamaʻāina Sunday event held earlier this month in celebration of the U.S. Navy’s Submarine Force’s 125th birthday. It was such a joy welcoming local families, students, and service members to step aboard the USS Bowfin and explore the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum grounds.

We’re so thankful for the support from our community and loved seeing so many of you enjoying the exhibits, learning something new, and spending the day with us.

We hope to see everyone again soon!

Passing of Former Submarine Commander Harry Mathis

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of retired U.S. Navy Captain Harry Mathis, former commander of USS Sculpin (SSN-590), at the age of 92.

Captain Mathis led Sculpin during the Cold War mission featured in our museum’s exhibit, a remarkable operation that took place 53 years ago this month. We were honored to spend time with him in San Diego, where he generously shared his memories and insight—many of which live on in the video featured in our museum’s Cold War gallery today.

Along with his distinguished military career of 28 years, Mathis went on to serve two terms on the San Diego City Council and with various governmental advisory boards.

We are grateful for his service, his leadership, and his willingness to help preserve this important history. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and former shipmates.
