It's August !
Time to Befriend our Inner
and Outer Landscapes
August happens to be National Wellness Month. But what is the point of celebrating wellness nationally if we ignore the very root of the word national? A nation is fundamentally the land—our shared outer terrain, which directly mirrors our inner terrain.
To underscore why it's critical to become aware of what is moving in and around this shared land, I want to highlight two things that just occurred right outside my home practice.
Last week, on the historic estate where I reside and practice, I observed a contractor spraying pure glyphosate (the active ingredient in weedkillers like Protek) to kill poison ivy all along our stone walls - the exact spots where local kids play and people walk their dogs. It was a windy morning, setting up the perfect condition for chemical mist to drift right toward the adjacent community organic farm,
Pesticide and herbicide drift typically accounts for about 2% to 25% of an applied chemical becoming airborne, depending on weather and droplet size. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that this off-target movement happens via liquid droplets during spraying, or even as gases hours later.
I have long been an advocate for reducing our reliance on toxicants in our food and material goods, so you can imagine this activated my defenses. I got busy and wrote a firm, calm, fact-based email to management. No lectures; I just laid out the science of chemical drift, gut microbiome destruction, and soil biology.
I was greatly relieved when the very next day, management listened to the feedback and issued a permanent ban on chemical herbicide applications across the entire property.
Then, just two days later, I hosted the annual summer sing for my chorale on the property. Right in the middle of it, a bumblebee relentlessly targeted an elderly guest and stung her twice. She was shaken, but she was an absolute trouper.
I didn't run for a chemical can or panic. I grabbed ice packs and a homeopathic remedy called Apis mellifica, which is specifically used for acute stings and swelling. The ice handled the heat on her skin, and the remedy went to work on her internal system. By the end of the evening? No pain, no swelling, and no hard feelings.
These two incidents highlight a massive cultural question; how do we actually handle things that disrupt our inner and outer environments?

Healthy Rivers, In and Out
If you’ve spent any time in the wellness world, you’ve probably heard the claim that a good massage "flushes toxins" out of your muscles. Let’s shed some light on that.
From a clinical standpoint, a standard Swedish or deep tissue massage doesn't magically wipe away chemical poisons from your cells. Honestly, most people get a massage simply because it feels good!
What massage therapy actually does is mobilize normal metabolic waste—like cellular debris and lactic acid—out of tight, stagnant tissues so your organs can naturally filter it out. This boosts circulation and relaxes the nervous system, which indirectly aids overall organ function.
But when we look at specialized manual therapies like Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), which is a Medical Massage modality, we are talking about truly accelerating fluid movement. Clinical studies show that MLD actually increases lymphatic fluid flow and filtration through your nodes by up to 30%.
Supporting the nervous system and the overall circulation of blood and lymph lightens the burden on your excretory organs—the liver and kidneys—and helps them do their jobs better. These are massive benefits.
The questions remains: what do we collectively mean when we say the word "toxin"?

One Body, One Life...Choose Wisely
Stay with me for this deeper delve. It will take only a few minutes, but it is well worth the investment of time. This baseline knowledge could only increase your awareness and motivate you to make the best personal choices that lead to healthier environments.
So, grab a mug of tea, and let's break it down. If you need a recommendation, here is a quick link to one of my favorite herbal blends with Calendula, Chamomile, Fennel, and Ginger root. It's a mild-tasting brew with soothing, anti-inflammatory, and gut-warming benefits.
To understand what we're talking about, we have to split our language into two distinct categories: toxins versus toxicants.
Toxins are metabolic waste—the byproduct of living in an organic body—or biological poisons created entirely by nature. Think of bee venom, snake venom, or the bacteria a tick carries.
Toxicants, on the other hand, are man-made chemical poisons introduced by human industry. Think of synthetic pesticides, plastics, and industrial lawn sprays. Our bodies are vulnerable to both, but man-made toxicants carry the most severe, long-term risks to our biosystems.
Biological toxins can be mobilized out of tissues and toward excretory channels through exercise, movement, frequency, increasing energy, and manual therapies like massage. But when it comes to actually clearing toxicants out of the body, that is a much more complicated process and well beyond the scope of this newsletter.
The hard truth is that toxicants are monumentally harder to get out of our bodies than they are to get into them. Many of us simply need deeper education on exactly how these chemical poisons bypass our natural defenses in the first place.
So, how do we handle this dilemma? How do we minimize our exposure to these invisible chemical disruptors without letting fear dictate our lives?
The answer is absolutely not to retreat indoors and hide from the world. Yet, that is exactly the trap so many people are falling into right now.

Bringing Clarity to Outdoor Risks
In my practice, I’ve noticed a concerning trend among some of the patients I serve. They are pulling away from the natural world out of sheer anxiety fueled by the Covid 19 pandemic. The obsession with chemical sterilization has created a weird kind of cultural paranoia. We stay inside, and let an intense dread of ticks and Lyme disease steal our summer. If it isn't Lyme disease, it's anything else we perceive as the next big threat.
Lately, I've watched this hypervigilance evolve past bugs into an avoidant fear of changing weather, sweat, exercise, and even the sun. I chose this topic for August in the hopes that it will help my patients and readers alike move past these barriers.
Mindful prevention is necessary, absolutely. But the sheer panic out there is fueled by misinformation that cuts us off from the exact nature medicine our nervous systems need.
Let’s review the actual facts:
-
Mindful, safe sun exposure is a pillar of health. Complete avoidance of the sun leaves us severely Vitamin D deprived. The truth is, Vitamin D isn’t just a simple nutrient—it functions as a vital hormone that is monumentally beneficial for the immune system.
-
You don’t need DEET. Nature builds its own shields. High-quality botanical oils are incredibly effective at scrambling a tick’s sensory receptors. Spritzing your clothes with Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) or a blend of rosemary and lemongrass blocks them without toxic runoff on your skin or the soil.
-
A crawling tick doesn't mean you're defenseless. Ticks usually wander around for hours before latching. Proactive hygiene is your real weapon. Make a ritual out of a "post-walk tick check," toss your clothes in a hot dryer for 10 minutes to kill any stragglers, and keep your internal immune terrain resilient with an Ayurvedic diet and gut-supporting herbs.
-
Bites do not equal automatic, catastrophic illness. Pathogens can only thrive if the internal terrain of the host allows it. A groundbreaking lab study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health tested botanical extracts against Lyme bacteria. They found that herbs like Japanese Knotweed and Cat’s Claw actually outperformed standard antibiotics at killing the highly resilient, dormant forms of the bacteria in test tubes. Great News!
Yes, being outside carries some risk. But the responsibility is on us to be educated and prepared, not to demand that nature be tamed so we feel "safe". When we rush to use antibiotics or harsh pharmaceuticals for every little thing, we’re essentially trying to kill a fly with a blowtorch—we knock out our entire immune system in the process.
By the same token, hiring pesticide companies to create toxic chemical barriers around yards, or advocating for aerial spraying that wipes out entire ecosystems is even worse.
A Crucial Note on Safety: Natural remedies are powerful, but they require scrupulous attention. They are active compounds and can have real side effects if misused. How, when, and why you take them matters. Holistic remedies should never replace emergency medical care. Anyone with a known severe allergy must carry an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen). If anyone ever shows signs of anaphylaxis—like throat tightness or difficulty breathing—call 911 immediately.
