It's National Work Zone Awareness Week
April 11 - 15, 2022
This week is dedicated to raising awareness about work zone safety as construction projects begin to pick up.
Work zone safety is especially important to us, as our drivers pass through many work zones on a daily basis, and our construction crew carefully plans out the details of each traffic package needed for our various job sites to keep everyone safe. Check out the quick video below to hear about the elements of our safety packages from Seth Widli.
In 2020, 857 people were killed in 774 fatal work zone crashes. What many fail to recognize is the vast majority of people killed in work zone crashes are motorists and their passengers. In 2020, 117 workers died in work zones, making it all the more important for drivers to slow down and stay focused while approaching and passing through a roadway work zone.
Congrats, Norm & Justin!
March Good Catch Winners of the Month
Norm Arnold called the dispatch line while off duty, and reported hearing what sounded like a tire coming apart as an LNG truck went by his house. Dispatch alerted the vehicle in Brandon. The driver of truck #7400 stopped to check their tires, and noticed one had a recap coming apart. Maintenance was called, and the tire was changed, which prevented a blowout from happening.
Great save, Norm! Thank you for looking out for your co-workers, even while off duty!

Justin Brown noticed a large box around a corner on a very icy and winding road. Justin decided to stop and remove the box, fearing that someone would come around the corner and get into an accident while swerving to avoid the box.
Great work, Justin! This is a good example of a trait we look for in Leaders in Safety: Actively Caring for People (AC4P)!

Safety Topics
Cab Cleanliness & Equipment Inspections
It is easy for cabs to become cluttered with everyday items, but loose items can become projectiles in the event of a collision or rollover and leftover food can attract vermin and insects that can cause damage to vehicles and equipment. If you make cab cleanliness part of your inspection in the morning, it should make keeping up with it much easier.
Fire Extinguisher Inspections
As the season progresses, be sure to inspect your fire extinguishers. Doing so will help you if you need to get out of an emergency situation, such as your (or someone else's) machine catching fire. Inspections ensure that your equipment is in good working order.
Can you answer the question from this week's safety discussion?
