As the days grow shorter and the temperature drops, this begins the season of storytelling for many Native American Tribes. Native people are storytellers. For generations, our ancestors passed our Indigenous culture on to us through stories shared around a fire in a warm tipi. Today, with camera in hand, Native filmmakers bring those stories to life on screen.

The Indian Child Welfare Act was recently ruled unconstitutional in the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas. This and many stories about ICWA and the Native children involved are complex, and NAJA urges reporters and editors to fully understand the law and the ethical demands of covering ICWA cases.
