Bound for over a century in a flat box, the original 170 watercolours measuring 24 1/2 x 30 inches were painted on white wove paper over pencil outlines. Besides the remarkable plates, Martyn Anglesea describes the history of Ornithological painting, it's place in history, as well as the little known, until now, history of Parker and his extended family. Anglesea states, "Parker's paintings are quite unique as a contribution to nineteenth-century Irish Ornithology and with their Irish topographical backgrounds, for a collection of great value." Additional hand-colored lithographic by Lauters depicting dancing Balinese maidens surrounded by a wreath of orchids and 70 lithographic plates, including 56 hand-colored and one double-page by G. Severeyns after T.Bik, Blume, Gordon, Latour, van Raalten and A.J. Wendel. An attractive work on the orchids of the Malay archipelago. It was also issued with the title Flora Javae et insularum adjacentium nova series. ''It is possible that the parts of the two editions were issued almost simultaneously'' (Stafleu). The young Edwards made some drawings from the plates in the "Flora londinensis" which eventually caught the eye of Curtis who was sufficiently impressed with the work to arrange for Edwards to come to London for further training and instruction. Eventually he made many hundreds of drawings for "The Botanical Magazine," and severed his connection to Curtis only when he started his rival periodical in 1815 described here [see: HENREY, Vol. II, p.306]. One of the most significant 18th century collections of Natural History and Ethnography. A catalogue of the museum's holdings that includes a section entitled "Utensils of Savage Nations" which includes material from New Zealand, "Owhyhee, and other Sandwich Islands," "Otaheite and Society Islands," George's Island, the Pacific Northwest, etc, including material collected during Cook's voyages, and a number of natural history specimens are described like the wombat (illustrated), the koala, and the duck-billed platypus from Australia, and an extensive foreign ornithological section which includes many specimens from the South Seas. Forbes lists only one copy and could find no references to this rare work. Some spotting or browning to plates and offsetting from plates to text. Interior contents fresh and clean. The plates for this work were divided between his brother, Sawrey Gilpin, an eminent painter of animals, and Samuel Alken for the landscape subjects. British Fresh-Water Fishes Illustrated With A Coloured Figure Of Each Species Drawn From Nature By A.F. Lydon, And Numerous Engravings.

London: William Mackenzie, 1879. First edition. 204 pages. Folio, 36.7 x 27 cm. illustrated with 41 fine chromoxylographed plates of fish engraved by Benjamin Fawcett after drawings by A.F. Lydon, and numerous steel-engraved plates of angling locales. Houghton, a Shropshire clergyman, aimed his book at the fisherman rather than the naturalist, and the text (of which there is, unusually, plenty) gives information about recognition, feeding and breeding habits, habitat, bait and so on. BUCHANAN, NATURE INTO ART. 168. Alexander Francis Lydon's plates, which were printed by Benjamin Fawcett, show each fish in what is meant to be its natural habitat. For this work, Houghton studied the specimens in the collection of the British Museum. British Fresh-Water Fishes is notable for its incorporation of the naturalistic backgrounds of the fish habitats. Index. Ninety-six chromolithograph plates [with tissue guards] by Boston's William Sharp & Son, plus a plethora of woodcuts of fruit, flowers and trees. "He published also two complete volumes and part of a third entitled FRUITS OF AMERICA, purposing to give `richly colored figures and full descriptions of all the choicest varieties cultivated in the United States.' This work was issued in parts from 1847 to 1856, though the title page of the first complete volumes bears the date 1852. The volumes are handsomely printed printed and contain plates.......sketched from nature by Hovey himself." [see: DNB, Vol. 9, p.272]. Hovey also made the greatest single contribution to horticulture in the origination of the Hovey strawberry -- the first North American variety produced by a definite plan of breeding. NISSEN 941. Pages 322 - 329 with a full page plate bearing ten figures (illustrations) for the construction D'une oreille de Charrue -- Jefferson's new design for a plough-ear which he tested in Monticello. This article appeared in "Annales du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle" -- Tome Primiere with 32 engraved plates (2 folding, one colored). Jefferson wrote to A. Thouin, a major contributor to the Society: "I have made a small alteration in the form of the toe of the Mould-board, which, while it preserves the principle untouched enables us to shorten the ploughshare six to eight inches, which is preferred by the agriculturists here to the first form." He sent Thorin a small box containing the model, and calls himself "not to be adept, but only a zealous amateur in the objects of the society." Ex-library, Harvard College bookplate. The plates include birds from Africa, South America, New Zealand, and Madagascar, and are the work of John Gerrard Keulemans, "the major bird book illustrator for 30 years at the end of the 19th century" (Jackson, Dictionary of Bird Artists of the World). As Seebohm explains in the preface, the main impetus for the work came from the collection and initial research of James Edmund Harting, with subsequent information coming from the collections of Swinhoe and Shelley, as well as the author's own researches. He also made use of the national collections in the British Museum, Salvin and Godman's collection of South American birds, and the Smithsonian's collection of birds from the Pacific Islands.
