2024 was a special year for Kennebunk Land Trust's volunteer program.

We were fortunate enough to partner again with Kennebunk High School's Senior Volunteer Project and work with so many wonderful students passionate about the environment and the health of our planet.

This is the first in a series of videos and stories profiling the inspiring work from youth in our community.

the Plant Bros!

These intrepid students felt strongly about sharing their knowledge of plants to identify and document where invasive species are growing on Kennebunk Land Trust preserves. We used the information Xander and Anthony collected to create maps of where and how severe the colonies of invasives plants are along the trails. While still rudimentary, this information has kickstarted our invasive species monitoring, and launched beginning stages of a program to address this important issue affecting the ecology of our forests. Thank you Xander and Anthony!

Learning about Accessibility to Nature

In Many Forms

Have you ever wanted to spend some time in nature, but we're either physically prohibited by a trail, or felt uncomfortable navigating the outdoors?

Accessibly to the outdoors varies across public land - from trails unable to support wheelchairs or strollers, excessively rooty and uneven terrain, or lack of mapping and way finding. Accessibility is more than just proper trail width or elevation, but is creating a welcoming experience for people to be comfortable in nature.

Kennebunk Land Trust is endeavoring to open up our preserves for more public access, through better information sharing on trail conditions, parking, and trail mapping, improving terrain conditions, and generally making the trails more welcoming. We are even partnering with the Kennebunk High School Alterative Education program to support these goals. Stay tuned as we develop this project!

Kennebunk Land Trust recently attended a workshop titled "Increasing Trail Access" by Community Geographics (who run Maine Trail Finder!) demonstrating how to conduct trail assessments for qualities like physical features, amenities, wayfinding, and allowed actives.

This training and others like it will give us the knowledge to understand how our trails can be accessed and by who, and continue our journey of trail inclusion. We want to grow the number of trails users in all demographics and abilities, and welcome thoughts and suggestions for what what would make trails feel more welcoming to you.

Tell us what features, information, infrastructure or other would make trails more accessbile to you or feel more comfrtable in the outdoors.
