BIG NIGHT in Maine - Annual Amphibian Migration Monitoring

"Big Night" is an ecological initiative helping amphibians as the earth warms into spring. During the first warm rainy nights of spring, these critters will begin moving and migrating, and on one "Big Night" local citizens will band together to collect data on frogs and salamanders, and get them safe passage across roads to avoid humans and automobiles.

The Kennebunk Conservation Commission is planning a Big Night on Route 1 near the vernal pools at the old rest area. See map below.

If you are interested in participating, it is highly recommend to read the information in 'Of Pools and People,' and take the quiz to be ready to participate. The materials are helpful to learn some of the amphibians you might see in order to record the data and keep the amphibians safe.

Above is a map of the location of the Kennebunk Big Night.

Big Night in Kennebunk will commence some night between March 15 and May 15

depending on weather conditions.
