Branch Brook Nature Walk!
“Protected Landscapes of Southern Maine:
Branch Brook Watershed”
September 21 at 5:30 - 7:00p.m.
Free to the public
An upcoming walk offered by the Branch Brook Watershed Coalition, provides an opportunity for the public to learn about a major habitat restoration project and ongoing efforts to conserve land within the Branch Brook Watershed.
The one-mile walk begins on the Maguire Road on the Kennebunk Plains.
A major emphasis of this walk will be learning about the severe erosion caused by off-road vehicles along a powerline that crosses Branch Brook and the efforts by Central Maine Power (CMP) to restore the area and its vital habitats. Participants will view the restored area up close and they will learn about the watershed, its plants and animals, and the threats posed to water quality due to erosion and other human activities.
The walk will be led by Paul Dest, Executive Director of the Wells Reserve at Laudholm; Justin Richardson of the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Wells Water District (KKWWD); and Bill Coggin, Environmental Manager for CMP
Branch Brook Watershed is one of the most pristine watersheds in southern Maine. Located in Wells, Kennebunk, and Sanford, it encompasses 8,112 acres and provides drinking water to over 100,000 residents and visitors annually and provides habitat for a diversity of species. Land within the watershed has been protected by numerous organizations, including Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge to KKWWD, The Nature Conservancy, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and the Wells Reserve. Ongoing land protection efforts continue.
