First Saturday Nature Walks!

A film screening to learn the role of local lands and people in helping to restore the American chestnut to Maine’s forests!

Thursday, March 28. 3:30-5:30 PM

Wells National Estuarine

Research Reserve Auditorium

Library Center

342 Laudholm Farm Road

The Maine Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation is having a public meeting on chestnut restoration and presenting the movie Clear Day Thunder: Rescuing the American Chestnut

The film documents the history of this iconic tree and why so many people have worked so hard for so long to return it to the forests it once graced from Georgia to Maine.

The film will be followed by a Q&A with Dr. Tom Klak from the University of New England in Biddeford.

Partnerships with local Land Trusts and non-profit groups for planting and care of seedlings make this possible!

KLT is a part of this effort, with three chestnut trees are planted at For All Preserve!

Land Trusts and Solar Power Production

Can they co-exist? 🤔

Recently the New York Times shared a story discussing how solar power fields can impact nature, positively and negatively. This is a growing issue for land trusts across the country who are considering the environmental costs and benefits and what is allowed or not on their preserved lands.

Land Trusts ☀️

The Land Trust Alliance, the national organization for land trusts, has been providing guidance and examples to help local land trusts to make decisions.

Solar fields can block animal pathways with the fencing required for security, yet can also provide habitat for native plants and small mammals in addition to energy production. Each piece of land is different and local land use needs differ for each parcel.
