City of Gainesville Nature Parks—An update on the latest improvements

Wild Spaces & Public Places and Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs are pleased to provide an update on improvements made to the City of Gainesville’s nature parks. These efforts are the latest towards fulfilling the City Commission’s goal of having a world-class park system in our city.
We are taking an abundance of care during the pandemic—following all CDC guidelines while projects are under construction. The projects in this update include a few of the many treasured natural spaces within our city. We are excited to reveal these improvements and look forward to once again being able to enjoy these lovely spaces with our neighbors.

Boulware Springs Nature Park
3300 SE 15th St.
A new metal roof was installed in January on the pavilion at Boulware Springs Park. American Roofing Company, a small, local business, was the contractor for the work. The project cost was $5,495.00.

Morningside Nature Center
3540 E. University Ave.
New Timucuan Indian living historical exhibits have been constructed at Morningside Nature Center. The structures were built on June 16
and 17 by Big Kahuna Tiki Huts, Inc. in partnership with the Seminole Indian Tribe using hand-hewn cypress poles and freshly harvested
cabbage palm fronds from the Florida Everglades.
The project cost was $29,885.00.

Nature Center at Hogtown Creek Headwaters Nature Park

Renovations on t
he circa 1890 farm house at
Hogtown Creek Headwaters Nature Park
are nearly complete, with an anticipated completion date of late August. Upon finishing renovations, the farm house will be developed into a nature center for the Gainesville community. The project cost is approximately $478,000.

San Felasco Park
6400 NW 43rd Way
This park will be getting a new play structure geared towards children between 5—12 years old. Work has begun with installation anticipated to be complete in July. The approximate project cost is $28,915.
Springtree Park
2700 NW 39th Ave.
Construction began in March on this neighborhood nature park. The project includes improved park access and trails, a new playground, adult fitness stations, a deck overlooking Three Lakes Creek, a pavilion, park signage, fencing, a bike rack, trash cans, and pet waste station. The project is anticipated to complete in July. The approximate project cost is $197,609.
