A RECORD NORTH ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON
It’s not so much 2020’s record number of storms (30 named storms including “Iota”), that has raised alarm among scientists, but their extraordinary behavior, breaking records for intensity, strength and rainfall, and causing unprecedented damage. Farmers, especially in Central America, have been hard hit.
Like so much that is going wrong on our planet, the culprit is, of course, climate change. Excess heat, trapped in the atmosphere by greenhouse gases, is absorbed by the oceans and raises surface temperatures. From there, it’s pretty simple physics: heat = energy. As storms form, they absorb enormous amounts of energy and hold more water vapor, producing higher winds and heavier rainfall, and cutting wider paths. They penetrate further inland. Stronger winds over rising sea levels cause bigger storm surges. We get intensification, the term used when a storm gains wind speed of more than 70 mph in 24 hours. Before 2005, this occurred once every 1000 years; by the year 2100 it is likely to occur once every 10 years. When a hurricane changes from Category 1 to 4 overnight, there is no time to evacuate.
While it appears that the 2020 season is over for large, named storms (the next would be Kappa), there is no prospect of recovery for many farmers in the hurricane zones of Central America, who have lost everything - their livelihood and their homes - and have no choice but migration. Crop losses, food shortages, and mass migrations; there is no way these won’t impact the lives of our children and grandchildren in our own country as well. WE CAN STOP THIS. Get involved with ECA and take action today. Learn what you can do at www.eldersclimateaction.org. We must act now.

TAKE A TRULY MEANINGFUL ACTION TODAY: USE OUR LIBRARY OF FORM LETTERS TO HELP SAVE THE PLANET
ECA is collaborating with the U.S. Climate Action Network (USCAN) to launch a massive pressure campaign from now through January, demanding that the Biden Administration, Congress, and state and local officials act now to end all U.S. CO2 emissions by 2050.
The campaign begins first with the transportation sector, which contributes 35% of U.S. CO2 emissions, more than any other economic sector; and CO2 emissions are rising quickly. But the solutions are at hand: electric and H-fuel-cell vehicles are mature technologies, commercially available now. We want to ‘zero out’ this sector with requirements that all new vehicles be zero emission vehicles by 2030, and all vehicles be ZEVs by 2050, with subsidies to make them affordable.
|
|
This campaign comes out of the USCAN initiative that produced the Vision for Equitable Climate Action (VECA), detailed and comprehensive policy proposals for achieving the goals of the Green New Deal and ending the Climate Crisis. VECA gives lawmakers and regulators a roadmap of detailed targets and financing strategies for all sectors of the U.S. economy.
