A House of Prayer for all People.
| | |
This week we prayed our goodbyes to the Rev. Paul Shoaf Kozak and his family, as they move from our community to Iglesia Cristo Rey in Trenton, NJ. Paul takes up his appointment as Rector there on August 1st.
Paul was only a member of the cathedral staff for two years, but his impact here was broad and deep. He helped MANNA serve a larger number of people during the challenges of the pandemic, including those who speak Spanish. He helped the whole diocese grow its work with the Poor People's Campaign and make a commitment to it at diocesan convention. He helped cathedral chapter chart a path for making reparations. And he did a lot of great preaching, consistently calling us to the work of justice with clarity and joy. Just as importantly, he was a great colleague and a lot of fun to be with.
There's an old saying, variously attributed: "You never really leave a place you love. You take a part of it with you and leave a part of you behind." How wonderfully and mysteriously true this is. We form one another and remain "present" to one another in myriad ways, through separated by hundreds of miles or decades of time. Each one of us contains a world, each room full of people is a galaxy of histories, influences, habits and mindsets shaped by mentors, heroines, and teachers.
In light of this, let us be a bit more curious about one another, making space for the sharing of stories, holding off on making assumptions about one another before knowing much about the path travelled previously. And let us make each encounter one that matters and forms others for good, being the face of Christ to the extent we are able.

Resources for Discipleship...
This program year, the Cathedral is offering the resources of MiniRevolutions from Illustrated Ministry to support everyone, and especially families with children at home, in their formation. Mini Revolutions is an intergenerational, monthly, digital curriculum based on the Revised Common Lectionary. Small groups and families can practice the rhythms and experience the seasons of the church year through the revolutions of the liturgical calendar. Scripture-based wondering questions, weekly micro-practices, and beautiful coloring pages illustrating scripture are available for use at home, at church, or on Zoom.

We invite you to join us in trying this week's microPractice (above).
SERMON ON MATT. 7:1-2
As Matthew quoted in Matthew 7:1-2:
'Do not Judge, so that you may not be Judged. For with the Judgement you make you will be Judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.'
It brings me back to the days I was homeless, being looked down upon, being Judged for my unfortunate circumstance, and measured up and down like I was nothing. With the grace of God I was able to look beyond all that, and become the woman I am now, I volunteer to help others within my church community and beyond, to make sure they know, everyone of them are worth something, they are never alone and will never be Judged.
