One of the interesting, and concerning, aspects of the COVID-19 crisis is the large number of ripple effects that have occurred due to the illness and our response to it. This week I have been learning about the impact created by lack of access to technology. Schools in our region have been wonderful in stepping up to help ensure students have laptops and internet access (when possible) to continue their school work remotely. We have also learned that this technology boost has been a gateway for many families to also access telehealth, remote therapy sessions, unemployment benefits, job posting sites, and more.
If/when these machines need to go back to schools for summer, these families will lose the basic capabilities they have been utilizing. In many ways, internet access now is like basic phone service of the past: everyone needed it to function. Thankfully, there are organizations that are ready to step in and provide some of these needs (e.g. our funded partner, The Piñon Project), and other collaborative groups that are quickly organizing to help fill the gap. United Way of Southwest Colorado has joined the effort and is hopeful that families in all of our five southwest Colorado counties will soon have what they need to stay connected and navigate these strange ripples.
“Why is this night different from all other nights?”
WHY WE SUPPORT
"I support the United Way of Southwest Colorado because they give donors a responsible and safe way to give funds to organizations in need. I know that any UW partner agency has been carefully vetted and is making trustworthy choices with my gift dollars. And best of all, funds raised here stay here in our community, so I know that I’m making a difference that I can see in my neighborhood."
ANNOUNCEMENT
In an effort to keep everyone safe while our communities recover from the effects of COVID-19, we regretfully announce that we will not hold the 2020 San Juan Brewfest as planned.
At United Way of Southwest Colorado, the beneficiary of the Brewfest, our primary focus is on helping people in our community at this time.
We are also working on a fun idea for an alternative way to celebrate the spirit of Brewfest this year - stay tuned.
Please mark your calendars for next year's San Juan Brewfest on August 28, 2021!
CREATE YOUR STIMULUS MONEY STABILITY PLAN

To help anyone who has questions about the best way to use their federal payment, we have created a six-step plan to support people in making smart choices.
The financial stability of every person in our community contributes to its strength. We hope this plan can help you or someone you know. READ THE PLAN
