Staff Announcement:

This past Sunday, June 6, it was announced that James and Amy Ferguson will resign effective June 20. James has been our Modern Worship Leader since 2016 and Amy has been Youth Director since 2017. James will be starting a new position that will require Amy to be more available with their family at home. They have enjoyed their time at Faith United and we are deeply grateful for their years of service.

Both ministries will continue as we work to fill these positions.

Faith & Environment Weekly Topic:
Sequoias Burned

Photo: A sunset is obscured by smoke-filled skies near Alder Creek Grove, where sequoia trees had grown on this Sierra Nevada ridge top.

7,500 to 10,600 Sequoia trees were killed in a wildfire at California's Sequoia National Forest last summer — 10% to 14% of the world’s natural population.  The giant sequoias, which only grow naturally on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, can reach heights of 300 feet; we see really large dead trees that are 1,500 to 3,000 years old. It will take thousands of years for those forests to return to the majesty that we’ve seen. This really is a warning sign much bigger than the trees themselves; this unprecedented mortality event was caused mainly by climate change-driven drought.
Now is the time to redouble our efforts to stop global warming.

Cooperative Parish Shared Ministry with Crystal Park UMC (CPUMC)

About a month ago, it was announced in worship that effective July 1, Pastors Jake and Steve will be appointed to Crystal Park UMC in addition to their appointment at Faith United. This appointment is called a “Cooperative Parish Appointment”. The Bishop (Rev. Tracy Smith Malone), the Tuscarawas District Superintendent (Rev. Cara Stultz Costello), and the cabinet (all ten district superintendents) discerned this strategic appointment based on the many years of shared ministry through Faith Kitchen that has shown a strong, healthy relationship between Faith United and CPUMC. The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church describes cooperative parishes like this: “Local churches, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, may enhance their witness to one another and to the world by showing forth the love of Jesus Christ through forms of mutual cooperation.” The primary goal for this first year in partnership is worship, prayer, and discernment.
  • Worship – Pastors Steve and Jake will alternate preaching at CPUMC on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. The 2nd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of any month will have a guest preacher. The vision is to create a culture of call where lay persons will preach at least half of the time. The opportunity to preach can be a means of grace that for some clarifies a call to ministry. Teresa Purses, member of Faith United, and Paul White, from CPUMC, are serving as co-leaders to organize guest preachers and worship. If you would like to be considered as a guest preacher or would like to help in worship in other ways, such as music or being a liturgist, contact Teresa. Members from both congregations are invited to worship freely at either location on any Sunday.
  • Prayer – You are encouraged to be in prayer for this partnership. A Leadership Team consisting of some members from Faith United and CPUMC will be meeting regularly. Our prayer is that God will guide us into shared ministries that will further the Kindom of God in our communities and deepen the vitality of each congregation.
  • Discernment – The Leadership Team will be devoting time to prayer, study, and dialog to discern the path of and vision of this cooperative parish that will best serve God’s intentions.
