This is the third issue of "Navigator News", listing the most recent information on open waiting lists for Bergen County affordable housing rentals for senior citizens.

There are 2 "hot topics" ---- 1. the open waiting list for the Avalon Bay in Teaneck. This will remain open until April 30th, so apply ASAP using the link to Piazza, Inc. AND 2. Requests for applications for 1 bedroom apartments at the Mediterranean House in Fort Lee. Requests must be mailed in and postmarked by April 12th.

Discard any previous issues of "Navigator News" and refer to this one, until a new edition is released in about 2 weeks.**

Each email will lead with any new wait list openings, Section 8/Choice Voucher openings, deadlines or closings that we find out about, ("Hot Topics" in red) followed by the standing wait list info at various properties. At the end, I have provided links to websites of agencies that administer some affordable housing units, so applicants can sign up themselves for newsletters and/or any future notifications of wait list openings.

You can use Navigator News as a resource when answering questions about affordable housing from your clients. Since the wait times for apartments can be variable, encourage your clients to sign up for as many wait lists as possible. Each building will have slightly different criteria as to minimum income and rental rates, which you can see when you follow the links to their websites.

The Bergen County Division of Senior Services Information and Assistance Service Providers can help seniors complete applications, and provide “Options Counseling” which describes available programs that can help them to save money, such as the Medicare Savings Program, Food Stamps, info about saving on utilities and transportation and other topics. UPCOMING PUBLIC HEARINGS ON HOUSING AND NEEDS OF OLDER ADULTS:

I have included information about the Bergen County Division of Community Development's upcoming public hearings on housing. See section below highlighted in yellow. Please make plans to attend one of these sessions to make your viewpoints known.

Also, a reminder that the Bergen County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services/Aging & Disability Resource Center is holding a Public Hearing on Thursday, May 2nd on the Needs of Older Adults in Bergen County. Registration opens at 8:30 am. It will be held at the County Administration Building, 5th floor--Freeholder Public Meeting Room at One Bergen County Plaza, Hackensack, NJ. It is open to all Bergen County residents 60+, caregivers and agencies serving older adults in Bergen County. Written and verbal testimony is acceptable and limited to 5 minutes. Anyone who wishes to testify, or needs additional information should call Senior Services at 201-336-7416. This is another great opportunity to have your voices heard.
