Near Miss – Leaking Propane Cylinder Identified in Storage

During a recent members site inspection conducted by MSA, a propane cylinder in storage was found to be actively leaking. The cylinder had been filled and was not in use at the time. This situation had the potential to result in a significant fire or explosion if the leak had gone unnoticed.

Immediate action was taken to secure the area and a local propane supplier was contacted. Following the incident, the company implemented new inspection procedures to help prevent similar occurrences in the future. This near miss highlights the importance of conducting regular inspections and remaining alert to potential hazards, even in storage areas.

For additional support, MSA members can also Request a Safety Inspection at no cost from an MSA safety consultant to help identify hazards and improve workplace safety.

Reminder to always take the time to:

  • Inspect propane cylinders as per manufacturers guidelines for leaks, damage, or corrosion before storage or use.
  • Store cylinders in well-ventilated areas away from ignition sources.
  • Report any damaged or leaking cylinders immediately.

Thanks to a thorough inspection and a prompt response, a potentially serious incident was prevented.
