For sale is a near complete run of the journal Artist and Spectator (
Khudozhnik i zritel'
), which was first published in 1924 and which changed its title to Soviet Art (
) from 1925 until it ceased publication in 1928.
The group offered here is over 90% of the journal's total run. There were 41 numbers published.
The journal is content rich... each issue contains multiple essays, articles and discussions with illustrations of constructivist theory and design. Virtually all the well-known avant-garde artists are represented with drawings, photos and illustrations. The constructivist cover design of the 1924 issues was by A. Sofronova and the 1925 issues by O. Chichagova.
There is a focus on Meyerhold, Kamerny and other theater productions as well as the evolving cinema during the formative years of Soviet artistic culture.
