Barbara Jackson, UNMC
Barbara Jackson is a professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and director of the Department of Education and Child Development and the Interdisciplinary Center for Program Evaluation at the Munroe-Meyer Institute.
A primary focus of her research has been the investigation of short- and long-term developmental outcomes of infants with a NICU experience.

What is the future direction for your early childhood research?
"Translational research with infants/toddlers and their families has been the heart of my research in the past and will continue to be my emphasis in future years. My interests are in two distinct areas: creation of an infant/toddler literacy assessment, and long-term developmental and health outcomes of infants with a neonatal intensive care unit experience. Of recent interest is the issue of disparities in developmental follow-up, identifying who is missing in follow-up studies and how accessibility can be improved."
Are there any new research projects or activities you are starting on now?
"One of our departments’ newest research activities, Mindfulness and Mastery, is related to executive functioning with young children ages 2 to 5. This project is under the direction of Dr. Jolene Johnson at the Munroe-Meyer Institute and in collaboration with UNL, under the direction of Dr. Helen Raikes. It is being conducted as part of an acceleration grant with 12 sites in the Educare network.
This multi-faceted project has the potential of providing helpful information to the field on implementation strategies and outcomes that are focused on children, teachers and families in a relatively new field of study."
Why is early childhood research important
?
"Science to practice models are key to raising the quality of our work in early childhood. Research provides the opportunity to implement new, innovative strategies that could potentially help practitioners to maximize their impact on the children and families. Our responsibility as researchers is to find effective mechanisms to disseminate research findings and support its applications in educational and clinical settings."

BWG Research Network seeks emerging scholars
The Bridging the World Gap National Research Network is recruiting a new cohort of Emerging Scholars for 2019-20.
Past scholars have had the opportunity to receive mentorship from BWG Research Network. They have found new colleagues, partnered on successful research projects and become integrated into our community of scholars interested in promoting the language and early literacy outcomes of young children from low-income backgrounds.

NAECR Knowledge series begins with Box training
The first NAECR Knowledge event is

Representatives from UNL Information Technology Services, Security Services and UNL Institutional Review Board will outline some of Box’s most useful features, and discuss how to share secure data using the collaborative file storage tool.

National Science Foundation Discovery Research PreK-12
The Discovery Research PreK-12 program seeks to significantly enhance the learning and teaching of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science (STEM) by preK-12 students and teachers, through research and development of STEM education innovations and approaches.
The program invites proposals that address immediate challenges that are facing preK-12 STEM education as well as those that anticipate radically different structures and functions of preK-12 teaching and learning. The program has three major research and development strands: 1) assessment, 2) learning and 3) teaching.

Brady Education Foundation
The Brady Education Foundation funds program evaluations in education that have the potential of informing public policy and private funding. The Foundation is particularly focused on the evaluation of programs that are consistent with a strength-based approach and show promise of being feasible, accessible, effective and sustainable.

University of Nebraska Core Facility Grant Program
The University of Nebraska is extending a grant program to encourage faculty researchers across all four campuses to employ NU core facilities in their research projects. The program’s aim is to help researchers generate data that strengthens grant proposals, resubmissions and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
Faculty members from all ranks are eligible to submit proposals if they did not use core facilities or associated technology platforms in fiscal year 2017 or 2018. Applicants may request $5,000 per facility, or up to $9,000 total if they use more than one facility.
Proposals are reviewed on an ongoing basis.

March 31, 2019

National Institutes of Health: Reducing Health Disparities among Minority and Underserved Children
This NIH initiative encourages research that targets the reduction of health disparities among children, including a focus on ethnic and racial minority children and populations of underserved children.
Specific targeted areas of research include bio-behavioral studies that incorporate multiple factors that influence child health disparities (biological, lifestyle factors, environmental, social, economic, cultural and family influences); studies that target the specific health promotion needs of children with a known illness and/or disability; and studies that test and evaluate the comparative effectiveness of health promotion interventions conducted in traditional and nontraditional settings.

website enables NU faculty to advertise opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students seeking work experience in early childhood research.
Students can browse available positions and filter them by campus location, academic level (i.e., graduate or undergraduate), position type (e.g., assistantship, paid, volunteer) and the age group being researched.
Postings automatically expire after six months, or faculty can select a specific expiration date.
