Research collaboration opportunities available
at Kit and Dick Schmoker Reading Center

If you are a faculty member interested in collaborating on research to help enhance children's reading skills, the Kit and Dick Schmoker Reading Center would love to hear from you.
"We are interested in getting people to collaborate with us to expand the research mission of the Reading Center," said Rachel Schachter, associate professor of child, youth and family studies, and the center's director.

Housed within the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, the center provides one-on-one reading instruction to students who are reading below grade level. Tutoring is provided by CEHS graduate and undergraduate students, under the direction of university faculty and certified teachers. Instruction is individualized and based on assessments given by the tutors.
The center serves students in grades K-6 year-round, and students in grades 7-12 during the fall semester.
Schachter noted that the Reading Center collects historical data on its students, and that opportunities exist for new data collection.
“It’s an underutilized resource,” she said. “The Reading Center is a great space for people to conduct research outside of tutoring hours. I think it’s an opportunity for researchers to leverage data we are already collecting and to think about how they might address their research questions at a low cost.”
For example, Schachter said, one current study at the Reading Center involves researchers connecting reading comprehension and math to help students enhance their math skills.
Faculty interested in collaborating with the Reading Center should contact Schachter at rschachter2@unl.edu. There is a mini-application process, which is reviewed by the Reading Center advisory committee.
“We want to ensure researchers’ proposed activities align with our mission,” Schachter said. “We are excited to have any conversations with faculty interested in working with us.”

Administration for Children and Families Secondary Analyses of Head Start Data
The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) is soliciting applications for Secondary Analyses of Head Start Data awards. These awards aim to support researchers conducting secondary analyses of data of relevance to Head Start (HS) programs and policies.
This includes research of relevance to HS programs serving families with children 3 to 5 years old; Early HS programs serving pregnant women and families with infants and toddlers; American Indian Alaska Native (AI/AN) HS programs serving families in tribal communities; and Migrant and Seasonal HS programs serving families engaged in migrant and seasonal farm work.
The goals of the awards are to: 1) Address topics of current relevance to the goals and outcomes of HS programs; 2) Encourage active communication, networking and collaboration among prominent HS researchers and policymakers; and 3) Increase the capacity of HS researchers to analyze existing data sets and disseminate their findings to multiple audiences.
Estimated total program funding: $1 million
Award budget: $90,000 – $100,000

Child Care Policy Research Partnerships, Secondary Analyses of Child Care and Early Education Data
The Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation in the Administration for Children and Families is soliciting applications in 2024 for two new research grant programs. Findings from both programs are intended to inform policy, program administration and future research.

Secondary Analyses of Child Care and Early Education Data
Proposals will support researchers conducting secondary analyses of data to address key questions of relevance to the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF).
Award budget: $90,000–$100,000
Proposal due date: May 10, 2024

Child Care Policy Research Partnerships
Proposals will support five-year cooperative agreements between Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) Lead Agencies in states, territories or tribes, and research partnership organizations to develop investigations of child care subsidy policies and practices to increase low-income families’ access to quality child care.
Award budget: $100,000–$400,000

Funding Forecast: Access to Infant and Toddler Care and Education: Research and Evaluation Grants
The Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation in the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) plans to solicit applications for Access to Infant and Toddler Care and Education: Research and Evaluation Grants.
This grant opportunity will provide funding to address key research and evaluation questions related to care and education access for infants and toddlers at the national, state or local level.
Estimated award budget: $75,000–$450,000

Funding Forecast: OPRE Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) Lead Agency Data and Research Capacity Grants
This grant opportunity will provide funding to support partnerships between CCDF Lead Agencies and researchers to develop and improve state, territory and Tribal data systems and build the capacity of CCDF Lead Agencies to collect, analyze and use data to guide child care policy decisions and program improvement efforts.
These 18-month projects will fund a planning phase to develop a research plan to address questions of interest to the CCDF Lead Agency, including a plan for identifying, linking and using state, territory and Tribal data to inform child care policy decisions.
Estimated award budget: $75,000–$150,000

Racial Equity Research Grants
The Racial Equity Research Grants program supports education research projects that will contribute to understanding and ameliorating racial inequality in education. Focus is on studies that aim to understand and disrupt the reproduction and deepening of inequality in education, and which seek to (re)imagine and make new forms of equitable education.

National Research Conference on Early Childhood

2024 CYFS Early Childhood Research Summit

The summit's keynote speaker is Chrishana Lloyd, a research scholar in early childhood development at Child Trends, one of the nation’s most respected sources for research and data on children. With more than 25 years of experience in education and social science, Lloyd is an expert in applied implementation research, racial equity framing in a historical context, innovative data collection methods, and early care and education workforce issues and initiatives.
