Helen Kelley Symposium for Excellence in Education

This event will focus on professional learning supports for early childhood educators, including the birth to pre-K and early elementary settings.
Speakers include Dr. Linda Reddy, professor and associate dean of research at Rutgers University, and Dr. Hope Gerde, director of the Institute for Early Childhood at Texas A&M University.
There will be a facilitated question and response panel with the speakers following their presentations.
This event is sponsored by CEHS with support from NAECR and CYFS. It is funded by a generous gift from Richard and Helen Kelley through the University of Nebraska Foundation.

New! University of Nebraska Faculty Grants Collaboration Initiative
The Collaboration Initiative is designed to enhance competitiveness of University of Nebraska faculty for federal extramural funding by fully leveraging the intellectual capacity and research resources across the NU campuses.
One-year grants are available to fund seed grants designed to strengthen federal research funding applications. Awards are available to collaborative teams with faculty from at least two different NU campuses.
Principal Investigators must attend the Faculty Collaboration Initiative Grants Annual Meeting on Oct. 6, 2023, to be eligible for funding; if conflicts exist, partial day attendance is acceptable.
If significant University-related obligations prevent attendance, please contact Kelly Dick at nri@nebraska.edu to request a waiver after registering by Sept. 25, 2023.
Budget: $10,000-$100,000 total for one year.

New! Funding forecast: Child Care Policy Research Partnerships, Secondary Analyses of Child Care and Early Education Data
The Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation in the Administration for Children and Families plans to solicit applications in 2024 for two new research grant programs. Findings from both programs are intended to inform policy, program administration and future research.

Childcare Policy Research Partnerships
Proposals will support five-year cooperative agreements between Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) Lead Agencies in states, territories or tribes, and research partnership organizations to develop investigations of child care subsidy policies and practices to increase low-income families’ access to quality child care.
Estimated award budget: $100,000-$400,000

Secondary Analyses of Child Care and Early Education Data
Proposals will support researchers conducting secondary analyses of data to address key questions of relevance to the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF).

Caplan Foundation for Early Childhood
The Caplan Foundation for Early Childhood is an incubator of promising research and development projects that appear likely to improve the welfare of young children, from infancy through 7 years, in the United States.
Funding is provided in the areas of early childhood welfare, early childhood education and play and parenting education.
The Foundation’s goal is to provide seed money to implement those imaginative proposals that exhibit the greatest chance of improving the lives of young children, on a national scale.

On Friday, Sept. 22, Scott Frohn, senior manager of assessment and psychometrics at Workera.ai, leads a presentation titled, "Putting ChatGPT to the Test: Practical Applications of Large Language Models for Assessment Development."
The presentation is co-hosted by the MAP Academy and the Buros Center for Testing.
The advancement and accessibility of ChatGPT and other Large Language Models (LLMs) over the past year has dramatically impacted how many of us think about work, productivity, learning and many other aspects of our lives.
This presentation will provide a high-level overview of how LLMs such as ChatGPT work, as well as practical advice for leveraging LLMs in assessment development and best practices in prompt engineering.
The presentation is free and open to the public. Continuing education credit for this program is available upon request from the Buros Center for Testing.
