Courtney Boise is a postdoctoral research associate with the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
Her research focuses on using qualitative and quantitative methods to address research questions pertaining to child outcomes embedded in multiple overlapping systems in family and school contexts.

What is the future direction for your early childhood research?
"I study how dyadic relationships (e.g., student-teacher, parent-teacher, parent-child) impact the development of children's executive function and social-emotional skills. I'm interested in how we can leverage existing systems in early childhood, such as home visiting, to improve these relationships and promote positive outcomes for children. Something I've been thinking about a lot recently is how to extend this work to other language minority populations beyond Spanish-speaking families."
Are there any new research projects or activities you are starting on now?
"This year NAECR has afforded me the opportunity to establish an undergraduate research brownbag to assist students in building research and professional skills. This brownbag series is just getting started, so we're still figuring out what works. But I've been able to meet with undergraduate students about topics such as writing personal statements and introductory statistics in SPSS. I hope this series will grow as I continue to apply lessons learned in developing future sessions."
Why is early childhood research important?
"So much development takes place during the early years, from rapid changes in the brain to children learning valuable self-regulatory skills. If we study malleable factors in early childhood, hopefully we can create practices and policies that intervene during this critical period and set children up on trajectories for success."
How can effective collaborations enhance the research enterprise?
"Collaboration allows us to bring more voices to the table and hear from different perspectives. We may each have different pieces of the solution, but if we work and research together we can ask more dynamic questions and intervene more effectively in young children's lives through mutually respectful relationships."

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System
This opportunity solicits applications to 1) implement standardized surveillance of postpartum women with a recent live birth or stillbirth on selected maternal behaviors and experiences that occur prior to, during and shortly after pregnancy; 2) implement surveillance on emerging issues related to maternal and child health that arise during the data collection cycle including post-disaster or emergency surveillance; and 3) ensure collection of timely, high-quality data for ongoing monitoring of maternal and infant health to inform programs, research and system changes.

National Science Foundation Discovery Research PreK-12
The Discovery Research PreK-12 program (DRK-12) seeks to significantly enhance the learning and teaching of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science (STEM) by PreK-12 students and teachers through research and development of STEM education innovations and approaches. The DRK-12 program invites proposals that address immediate challenges that are facing PreK-12 STEM education, as well as those that anticipate radically different structures and functions of PreK-12 teaching and learning.
Anticipated award amounts are as follows: (1) Level I projects up to $450,000 with a duration of up to three years; (2) Level II projects up to $3,000,000 with a duration of up to four years; and (3) Level III projects up to $5,000,000 with a duration of up to five years.

Department of Education Interdisciplinary Preparation in Special Education Early Intervention and Related Services for Personnel Serving Children with Disabilities who have High-Intensity Needs
The purposes of this program are to help address state-identified needs for personnel preparation in special education, early intervention, related services and regular education to work with children — including infants, toddlers and youth — with disabilities; and ensure those personnel have the necessary skills and knowledge, derived from practices that have been determined through scientifically based research, to be successful in serving those children.

National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Addressing Racial Disparities in Maternal Mortality and Morbidity
The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities is supporting a funding opportunity to advance the understanding, prevention and reduction of maternal mortality and morbidity among racial and ethnic minority women and socioeconomically disadvantaged women. Projects that encompass multiple domains (e.g., biological, behavioral, sociocultural) and multiple levels (e.g., individual, interpersonal, community, societal) to understand racial and ethnic disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality are encouraged.

Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation Tribal Research Center on Early Childhood Development and Systems
OPRE is accepting applications for a tribal research center on early childhood development and systems. The center will provide leadership and collaboration to promote excellence in community-based participatory research and evaluation of ACF early childhood initiatives that serve tribal communities. Settings to be considered include home visiting programs, early care and education center-based programs; home-based and family childcare providers; and Head Start and Early Head Start programs.

Department of Health & Human Services Reducing Health Disparities Among Minority and Underserved Children
This initiative encourages research that targets the reduction of health disparities among children. Specific targeted areas of research include bio-behavioral studies that incorporate multiple factors that influence child health disparities such as biological, lifestyle factors, environmental, social, economic, institutional, and cultural and family influences; studies that target the specific health promotion needs of children with a known health condition and/or disability; and studies that test, evaluate, translate and disseminate health promotion prevention and interventions conducted in traditional and non-traditional settings.

The Supporting Effective Educator Development program provides funding to increase the number of highly effective educators by supporting the implementation of evidence-based practices that prepare, develop or enhance the skills of educators. Department of Education — Education Innovation and Research Program Mid-Phase Grants
The Education Innovation and Research program provides funding to create, develop, implement, replicate or take to scale entrepreneurial, evidence-based, field-initiated innovations to improve student achievement and attainment for high-need students; and rigorously evaluate such innovations.
Mid-phase awards will fund implementation and a rigorous evaluation of a program that has been successfully implemented under an early-phase grant or other effort meeting similar criteria, for the purpose of measuring the program’s impact and cost-effectiveness.

Foundation for Child Development 2021 Young Scholars Program
The Foundation for Child Development is currently accepting proposals for its 2021 Young Scholars Program, which supports scholarship for early career researchers. The program funds implementation research that is policy- and practice-relevant, and that examines the preparation, competency, compensation, well-being and ongoing professional learning of the early care and education workforce.
Award amounts are up to $225,000 for primary research and up to $180,000 for secondary data analysis.
