CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
This February, celebrate Black History Month in South Carolina's Old 96 District. Teeming with Civil Rights history, unique art and artifacts found nowhere else in the world, and some of the most famous chefs in the state, Black History Month is the perfect occassion to experience the Unexpected Wonders of the region for yourself!
Introducing 2023 Chef Ambassador:
Erica McCier!
Congratulations to Chef Erica McCier, owner of Indigenous Underground in Abbeville, SC on being named one of three 2023 Chef Ambassadors for the state of South Carolina! Formerly a middle school teacher, Erica had to quit her job when she had a kidney transplant, and became interested in cooking while watching Food Network during her recovery.
Erica is now chef and owner of Indigenous Underground in downtown Abbeville, SC, right in the heart of the Old 96 District! You can enjoy some of her delicious (and famous) shrimp and grits, soul rolls (a southern twist on egg rolls), and specialty cocktails for lunch Wednesday through Sunday, or for dinner Thursday through Saturday.

Read more of her story below!

Lending a Fresh Voice to Greenwood History
In 2021 through the Governor’s Awards in the Humanities program, South Carolina recognized Rev. Chris Thomas with the Fresh Voices in the Humanities Award. Visit Old 96 District recently spoke with Chris about Dr. Mays and the Benjamin E. Mays Historic Site.

Festival of Flowers

Spring is almost here and that means Greenwood's topiaries are starting to bloom! Preparations for the annual Festival of Flowers are well underway and we couldn't be more excited. Mark your calendars (June 1-25, 2023) and follow us on Instagram for behind-the-scenes updates as we get closer to the festival!
Abbeville Spring Festival

Famous for our small town charm and family-friendly festivals, one of the first festivals of the year in the Old 96 District is Abbeville's Spring Festival! Food, vendors, music, rides for the kids—we can't wait for the 2023 Spring Festival (May 4-6, 2023) and the start of the summer festival schedule.
WHERE TO NEXT:
(Five places we're excited to visit soon—follow us on social media to join the adventure!)

  • The Opera House (Abbeville, SC) - Let's go see a show at the Opera House! Drawing some prominent attractions since its opening in 1904, we're excited to continue the legacy and dress up for one of the upcoming concerts on their schedule.
  • Mario's Pizzeria (Edgefield, SC) - Our next visit to Edgefield simply won't be complete without a pie. We've heard the Hawaiian Vacation pizza is one of the best, so that's our next order.
  • Mayberry Diner (Cross Hill, SC) - Themed after one of our favorite old tv shows, the Mayberry Diner in Cross Hill is serving up juicy burgers and other classic diner staples. It's a must-visit for Andy Griffith fans and we love the nostalgia.
  • Burbon & Bubbles (Clinton, SC) - A boutique bottle shop in the heart of the Old 96 District, this is the perfect stop for gifts (or maybe just something for yourself) on your trip through the region.
  • FATS bike & walking trails (McCormick, SC) - After a winter indoors, we're ready to stretch our legs! Forks Area Trail System (FATS) includes 37 miles of dirt trails, with many portions of the trail suitable for any level of hiker or biker.
