Dear Fellow Beacon Parents,
Earlier this month, the Beacon Network sent information to our families expressing concerns with the DPS Board’s proposed Executive Limitations policy. The Executive Limitations policy is a proposal for standard teacher rights and protections. As proposed, this policy will actually hurt affected innovation school teachers, students, and families.
In addition to potentially violating the legal framework for innovation as outlined in the Innovation Schools Act of 2008, the DPS Board of Education is not putting the needs of “our students, families, and staff first” as they have indicated as a priority.
Colorado law requires that any school board making revisions to the innovation plan and any agreed-to provisions of the collective bargaining agreement to work in collaboration with the affected innovation school or schools included in the innovation school zone. The DPS Board of Education did not consult or collaborate with our school, our teachers, our families, or our students when coming up with the proposed Executive Limitations policy.
By moving forward with the proposed executive limitations, the voices of our community are not being heard, and the choices of our staff are not being considered. If implemented, the Executive Limitation policy will negatively impact the Beacon Network’s ability to deliver on the promises made in our innovation plan between the district, teachers, families, and students.
These talking points outline how these changes would impact our schools, the benefits of innovation status, and clarify any misconceptions about how school innovation plans affect teachers’ rights.
How You Can Help:
After receiving feedback from other Beacon Parent Ambassadors and Parent Council members, we are sending the attached letter to the DPS Board of Education. Please review, and if you agree, sign the petition requesting the DPS Board to not move forward with the Executive Limitations policy.
Please also share your story with the DPS Board by email or by other events outlined below. The school will be sending more information on ways you can stay involved in this important matter.
Finally, if you would like more information about the details outlined in the approved innovation plans for Grant Beacon or Kepner Beacon Middle Schools that were co-created between staff, families, and community members, they can be found on the DPS Website and the CDE Website.
Thank you for your support and your time.
