As I noted in my last column, the practice of law for those of us in the Negligence Section has been transformed by the Legislature’s recent amendment to the Michigan No-Fault Statute. This transformation has intensified with the Supreme Court’s recent adoption of substantial amendments to the...

The first year of the 2019-2020 Michigan Legislative session was marked by the major budget battle that took place between Governor Whitmer and the Republican Legislative majority. Governor Whitmer’s road funding package was declared “dead on arrival” in the House and Senate, and the Legislature and Governor battled...

The changes to the Michigan Court Rules are aimed at improving the civil discovery process to make it more efficient, more cost effective and to increase access to the courts. MCR 2.302(A), encourages parties and their attorneys to cooperate in the process of discovery at the outset of a case, requiring initial disclosure of relevant and proportional information...

Statutes I Have Loved and (Mostly) Lost

Reprinted with permission from the June 2018 issue of the
Michigan Bar Journal
For an appellate attorney who concentrates in the area of negligence law, having personal feelings for particular statues comes easy. Some recently enacted statues became instant favorites since it was obvious that years of appellate litigation were going to be necessary to understand them. Some less-favored statues were bound to cause serious mischief because they either shouldn't have been written the way they were or shouldn't have been written at all...

Michigan Negligence Law Trivia
|
|
Mark R. Granzotto

|
It is time for another round of Michigan negligence law trivia, in which we will once again shine a bright light on the obscure and the recondite in negligence law in this state. The ground rules for this trivia challenge remain the same: you can use Westlaw, Lexis or any other legal research tool of your choice. You may not, however, consult an appellate attorney. Good luck to all.

The State Bar of Michigan Lawyer Referral Service (LRS)
The SBM Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) currently receives more than 500 calls each week from people looking for lawyers. Many of these are unable to find a match because there are not enough attorneys in some geographic areas or in some practice areas. For more than a year we have been revising and improving the LRS. The result is a system that produces better matches for attorneys and consumers alike. We are ready to begin a significant marketing initiative to consumers and we need more lawyers to participate as panel members.
Here are few examples of concrete improvements: Better matches mean a higher likelihood of securing paying clients than ever before. The new online platform now automates much of the tracking and reporting that attorneys had to do in the past. In addition to traditional cases, LRS has added Modest Means panels for family law and bankruptcy, and opportunities for attorneys to market Limited Scope practice.
Thank you very much. We are excited about these new opportunities for your section members to expand their practices and to enhance access to quality legal services throughout Michigan.
