A study from Autism followed gastrointestinal symptoms without a medical etiology in children with autism compared to similar aged participants with typical development starting at 2 and ending at age 12.

The children with autism presented with more gastrointestinal symptoms at each time point over the 10 year span, and they were also more likely to experience multiple and persistent gastrointestinal symptoms. The presence and number of gastrointestinal symptoms were associated with greater impairment in internalizing behaviors, sleep, communication, sensory processing, and repetitive behaviors.

Steve: We have received numerous inquiries about a study making national news about melatonin possibly causing heart failure.

The fervor over a non-peer reviewed observational cohort study, that had not even been presented yet at the 2025 American Heart Association annual meeting when the news came out, must be tempered.

This is the first study I've seen that has been negatively associated with heart health. Before I list some of the positive studies over the last five years, let's break down the negative study.

• The researchers compared those taking prescription melatonin versus non-prescription. Thus, it is not an apples to apples comparison with dosages, excipients, etc.
• The researchers did not clarify between new diagnoses of heart failure and existing ones.
• All of the subjects were diagnosed insomniacs, which can cause of host of health issues on its own.
• The researchers did not have information on the severity of insomnia of each subject, the presence of other psychiatric disorders, and if the patients were using other sleep medications along with it. Taking melatonin is contraindicated with certain sleep and mood medications.

Just in the last five years, I have posted peer-reviewed studies in prestigious journals linking melatonin's benefits for lower blood pressure, rehabilitation after myocardial infarction, less post-cardiac surgery oxidative stress, reduced atrial fibrillation, and overall better cardiac function, not to mention how critical it was during the pandemic.

In conclusion, while we never recommend self-supplementing melatonin without discussing it with a knowledgable health professional first, we will not stop recommending it because of one non peer-reviewed study.
