Dear Steve,
DID YOU KNOW that a new study published in JAMA Network Open suggests subjects without chronic disease taking a multivitamin for over 20 years did not lower mortality risk compared to nonusers?
The researchers noted that this goes against recent long-term findings showing the opposite. The researchers also noted they did not evaluate multivitamin use and risk of death among different kinds of populations, such as those with documented nutritional deficiencies, as well as the potential impact of regular multivitamin use on other health conditions associated with aging.
There are several takeaways from this study. First, it is well documented that most Americans fall short in their intake of vitamins A, C, D, E, and K, as well as calcium, magnesium, and potassium without supplementation. The researchers did not account for this. Second, analyzing mortality rates in isolation fails to recognize the range of quality of life benefits of multivitamin use identified in rigorous scientific studies, including the reduction of birth defects, reducing cancer risk, slowing cognitive decline, and many others. Third, beware of bias. Just this month, the journal BMC Medicine retracted a 2013 paper by Dr. Steven G. Newmaster et al., which started the much-publicized controversy about botanical dietary supplements being "worthless." Data fabrication was discovered by the University of Guelph, and Dr. Newmaster's subsequent research has likewise been called into question.
This study is still a good reminder that you should never self-supplement. Always meet with a knowledgable health professional who can assess your individual needs. There are so many variables when assessing supplemental nutrient needs, and they vary through every phase of life.

Carlson Lutein + Greens
To our dismay, Carlson recently added corn starch to their formula, so we will not be carrying it any longer. We are replacing it with Pure Encapsulations Lutein/Zeaxanthin (two capsules daily).

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online | On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. In September 2023, a man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. The FDA sent a warning letter to Amazon in late December 2023.

Make Nutritious Food Affordable
Steve: The cost of nutritious food and the lack of access to it are of significant concern to U.S. consumers. That's according to a new national poll of public attitudes on food and nutrition conducted the American Heart Association.
Nearly 7 in 10 (68%) respondents recognize healthy eating habits as an important factor in improving a person's chance for a long and healthy life. Yet more than half (53%) say the United States is not making enough progress for nutritious food to be more accessible and affordable.
If left unaddressed, there will be a sharp increase in cardiovascular disease cases that are anticipated by 2050:
- More than 6 in 10 (61%) U.S. adults are projected to have some form of cardiovascular disease by 2050 - up from about half of all adults currently.
- Obesity rates will increase nearly 40% in adults. from 43.6% to 60.6%, and by more than 60% in children, from 20.6% to 33% by 2050.
- The highest growth of obesity prevalence is expected to be among adults 20-44 and 45-64 years old. In children, a steep growth of obesity is projected in all age groups.
- More than 150 million people (close to half of the nation's population) will have a poor diet - the most prevalent factor affecting health conditions such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes.
Staggering numbers for sure, but there are solutions. The government should subsidize fruits and vegetables along with, or in place of, currently subsidized staples that are contributing to obesity: wheat, corn, dairy, soy, and sugar. Subsidizing would dramatically lower prices for fruit and vegetables. However, none the commodity lobbies want to acquiesce their share, much less compete with fruit and vegetables.
