Message from the Office of Government and Community Relations

Welcome to the January/February issue of our relaunched Neighbor News! Every two months, we plan to highlight the latest news and events on the Danforth Campus of Washington University in St. Louis.

This e-newsletter is part of the university's commitment to share information with the communities neighboring the Danforth Campus. We hope you find the newsletter helpful and informative, and welcome your feedback.

We encourage you to visit campus. Every week, WashU hosts productions, concerts, lectures, and sporting events - all open to the public. Feel free to take a stroll through campus - which is an accredited arboretum with more than 4,000 trees. We have included a selection of events in the Arts and Culture and Calendar of Events sections of this newsletter. We ask that you follow all health and safety policies while on campus, and have included a link to the COVID-19 Policy as a reference.

Life in St. Louis 1888-1905: T.S. Eliot's First Waste Land September 21 - February 12, 2023

John M. Olin Library, Level 1

The Waste Land by St. Louis native T.S. Eliot was published in 1922 and forever changed literature. The Life in St. Louis 1888-1905: T.S. Eliot’s First Waste Land exhibition commemorates the poem’s centennial by examining St. Louis during Eliot’s formative years, 1888-1905.

Born in 1888 to Charlotte and Henry Eliot, Thomas Stearns Eliot lived at 2635 Locust Street in St. Louis, Missouri, until he left home in 1905. From age 10 to 16, he attended school at nearby Smith Academy. T.S. Eliot would later recall, “…in my childhood, before the days of motor cars, … for nine months of the year my scenery was almost exclusively urban, and a good deal of it seedily, drably urban at that. My urban imagery was that of St. Louis, upon which that of Paris and London have been superimposed” (Frances Dickey, “T. S. Eliot and the Color Line of St. Louis,” 2021).

Written by Arthur Miller. Directed by Jacqueline Thompson.

The classic story of traveling salesman Willy Loman and his family explores the disillusionment of the American Dream and the toll it takes on all aspects of life. When Willy faces the end of his career without much to show for it, he begins to lose his grip on reality. His wife, Linda, and sons, Biff and Happy, are struggling to survive in the same crumbling world, each desperately trying to reach a version of happiness that proves elusive.

The Oresteia

Edison Theatre

*ASL interpreted performance March 4

The House of Atreus is burdened by an old curse and trapped in a cycle of retributive violence. How can justice be achieved without piling new crimes on top of old ones? Ellen McLaughlin’s gripping adaptation of the trilogy by Aeschylus explores the intimacy of violence and the centrality of actions by women in this ancient Greek story about the foundations of the law.

Washington University's Department of Music and the Performing Arts Department have teamed with the Edison Theater and the Kemper Art Museum to create one Web site that lists the exhibition and performance opportunities on the Washington University campus.
