| | Illegal Vending on 6th & Mission | | Persistent vending at southwest corner of 6th and Mission Street in front of Miss Saigon and other violations... | | |
Mayor Daniel Lurie, unlike past mayors, has made a strong effort to improve conditions on 6th Street and adjacent streets, and the community appreciates the Department of Public Works for washing down sidewalks weekly. However, without a consistent beat officer presence, these improvements last only a day or two. Although staffing shortages at Southern Station are understood, no other area in the South of Market continues to experience the recurring issues seen on and around 6th Street.
A particular concern is the illegal vending on the southwest corner of Mission and 6th, in front of Miss Saigon restaurant. The vendors appear to resell food obtained for free from food banks—diverting resources meant for those truly in need—and are also selling cigarettes and drugs.
Drug dealing, gambling with tablets, and large late-night crowds engaging in illegal activity at 6th and Market further contribute to unsafe conditions. Violations of the city’s sit-lie laws continue as well, impacting businesses.
Despite numerous calls to SFPD and assurances that a sergeant has been assigned to address these problems, no meaningful enforcement has occurred. As a result, the community is growing discouraged and fears that 6th Street and adjacent streets are being allowed to deteriorate once again.

Support High-Speed Rail...
High-Speed Rail has faced ongoing challenges securing the funding needed to move construction forward, particularly under the current administration. While some progress is being made, it is not happening at the pace supporters had hoped for.
There is, however, a strong possibility that new funding could come through a private partnership. According to Rail Authority CEO Ian Choudri, this could materialize as early as next year.
Many of us who have experienced high-speed rail in Europe and other countries recognize the value it could bring to California. The service is typically more comfortable, quieter, and overall more pleasant than air travel, not to mention the streamlined security experience.
If you wish to support High-Speed Rail, please send emails or write to:
