[October] [2021]
What a September! And so much ahead in October!
‌
‌
‌

Dear NMS families and friends,

It was great to see so many friends and families at CicLAvia on Sunday! Mango the Parrot made sure to be on his best behavior, as Teaching artists Gerardo, Matthew and special guest Jakob played on the porch for the cyclists. Great job to all!

Did you hear? NMS is set for growth!

We are so humbled and grateful to everyone who has supported NMS over the past 107 years, and continues to do so as we grow! If you tuned in for our September 25th benefit, Neighborhood Music School: Healing, Hope, & Harmony, you learned the big news! The Margie and Robert E. Petersen Foundation has awarded NMS $2.5 million dollars specifically to expand! We have great work ahead of us, and we need you!

As we envision, orchestrate and build the next phase of NMS, we need your input, feedback, and engagement to ensure that our growth is mindful, on-mission, and in service to our beloved NMS community. We set up a page on our website to begin collecting information, ideas, and interest from our students, families, teaching artists, collaborator and neighbors. This is the first step. Further down the line, we will host public and private focus groups, events, and more as we build our future. Please visit our website and fill out the surveys that best fit you(which may be all 3). Your input at this stage is so critical to laying the groundwork for our growth.

Dec 3rd--Save the Date for Careers in Music Episode 2! Featuring composers Michael Giacchino and Camilo Lara!

As part of our youth development and scholarship programming, NMS has partnered with Disney Music Group to develop the Careers in Music Series that launched in August! This evening of discussion with an amazing panel of Disney Music Group folks was both inspiring and informative, and allowed our students and teaching artists to get an inside peek at the different ways you can approach a career in music. We learned about the individual ways that each panel member balances the music business with their own identity as musicians, technicians and creatives. This is the first episode in the series, so if you missed it, check it out here! Save the Date of December 3rd for the next installment!

Get vaccinated at NMS!!!

On Sunday, October 24th, NMS will be hosting a pop up vaccination clinic from 9am-1pm! If you are 12 and older and have not yet been vaccinated or need a booster-- come on over!

A Farewell Letter from Jeanine

Our wonderful, energetic, lovely and caring Director of Development is leaving NMS to be with family on the East Coast. While she will be deeply missed, she always has a family here at NMS, and we wish her the very best! She has written this letter for you!

Dear NMS Family,

It has been an honor and a privilege to work alongside of you and ensure our community has access to the transformative benefits of music. Whether you are a funder, sponsor, or partner, I treasure the relationships and learning I have gained from you as we advanced the Neighborhood Music School mission. The past two years have brought many changes and I too will be undergoing a very big change as I relocate to the East Coast next week to pursue my next great adventure. My time at NMS brought me closer to the incredible community of Boyle Heights and amazing folx like yourself, who share in the belief that music connects, heals and inspires us all to be better humans.

I look forward to seeing the school blossom into the next phase and provide more resources than ever before. I am proud to be even a small part of 107 years of music and community.

Reminders about returning to NMS

Now that we have moved some classes back into NMS, the covid infection rate continues to grow in LA County, and everyone's safety is our number one priority. We will continue to offer online classes (even after the pandemic) both from the NMS house and the homes of our teaching artists. Everyone inside the house is required to wear a mask at all times.

Please make sure to wear a mask at all times. This is for your safety, the safety of the families at NMS, the staff, and those who live at home with the students, teaching artists and staff.

Please have your temperature checked when you enter the building.

If you are feeling unwell, please stay home. If someone in your direct household is sick, please stay home.

Returning to the NMS house will include the protocols described in the video at the end of this message.

Send in Showtime! videos!

Please keep your Showtime! videos coming! They bring such joy and showcase your awesome development! For the month of December, please share your favorite holiday tradition in your introduction! Please Email videos to office@neighborhoodmusic.org.

When we do return to NMS in person, the following policies and procedures will be in place. You can also watch this video !

Policies and procedures:

The following policies and procedures were created with guidance from and direction from City, County and State. If you are unable to comply with theses procedures, we encourage you to enjoy online lessons until the pandemic is under control.

  • All students must enter and exit through the back door.

  • Students may be accompanied by one adult to enter the building, if they require assistance getting to their classroom.

  • We will require all teaching artists and students to wear masks while at the school. This is for the physical and psychological health of all. Until there is a vaccine or successful treatment of COVID-19, we run the risk of infecting the vulnerable without these precautions in place.

  • Temperatures will be taken(with a digital, forehead thermometer) upon entering the school. If one is running a fever, they will be asked to return home immediately and seek medical advice.

  • Handwashing and sanitizing after using the restroom, and before touching an instrument, will be mandatory.

  • Maintaining a social distance of 6 feet or more with all staff, teaching artists and non-familial community is mandatory. Guests and parents are no longer able to observe classes from the inside of the classroom.

  • Indoor waiting areas will be largely off-limits. We will create seating outside, as much as we are able.
