new bench installed in bocce court
bocce bench Sal's
In memory of Sal Spinnato who grew up in Little Italy, was a bocce player, past president of the Little Italy Lodge, immersed in the parish and neighborhood, and a treasured friend to many, the Spinnato Family purchased and placed a new bench in Little Italy's bocce courts in memory of their brother/uncle/father. Father Bernie Carman, pastor of Saint Leo's, blessed the bench during a dedication last Sunday among approximately 100 attendees. Fifty people then attended a luncheon afterwards at Chiapparelli's Restaurant, Sal's favorite.

"I know Sal was looking down and saying, 'That's my family and friends!'" said his sister, Sue Walmsley. " It was a beautiful day, and everything went off without a hitch!" [photo credits: Thomas Scilipoti and Suzanna Molino]
a dog day afternoon
The first ever Dog Day Afternoon in Little Italy was a success with a great turnout on a beautiful sunny Sunday while raising lots of money for a great cause - Baltimore Humane Society. This event was organized by Joe Gardella (proprietor of Joe Benny's Focacceria, S. High St.) and took place in an empty lot in the 400 block. Joe and his staff cleared and cleaned up the lot, and a bunch of neighbors showed up in support of the event, many with their pooches.
