Little Italy community joins together in candlelight
vigil for slain La Scala manager
Little Italy has a strong reputation for always coming together. And our community certainly banned together in solidarity on the frigid Wednesday evening of January 26 for Chesley "Chesco" Patterson. Unfortunately, it was to memorialize Chesco's life, brutally and recklessly snatched from him two evenings before, mere blocks from La Scala Ristorante. Over 300 people gathered for a serene candlelight vigil to honor and celebrate the restaurant manager, beloved by most everyone who interacted with him for the past 17 years. With heartfelt remarks by Chesco's close friend and La Scala owner, Nino Germano, and several other staff members, the vigil was marked with many tears of anguish for his senseless death; yet also with quiet smiles of remembrances. Chesley, after all, was never without his smile.
“He was more than an employee,” said Germano (on left). “He was a family member. He was like the brother I never had.”
And Little Italy came together.

Exchange student Alice from Sardinia, Italy,
seeks a U.S. host family
"I am a 16-year-old girl from Italy who enjoys sports such as gymnastics and jogging; I am active on a track team. My father runs a restaurant and my mother is a pastry chef. We have a cat. My other hobbies include going out with friends and watching movies in English and Italian. I would like to explore new places, sports, and subjects during my exchange in the United States. I am a reliable, open-minded, and determined person who enjoys nature, open spaces, and the sea. I have been studying English for five years & a little French. My favorite school subjects are math and chemistry. I feel passionate about medicine and science, and later would like to return to the U.S. to attend medical school and become a doctor." ~ ALICE

"I am working on my family tree and wondering if anyone has any old photos from the area of 1028 East Lombard Street across from Attman's Delicatessen. The address was where my Rizzi / Lafortezza family started from Bari, Italy. I am trying to get a sense of what it was like for them, since I cannot currently travel to Italy. My father is Melvin Holden; his grandparents' were Nunziato Rizzi and Anna Lafortezza, with four Rizzi children: Laura Marie, Clara, Nicholas and Rocco."
