Neighborhood News September 2020
Over ten years ago, long-time St. James’ Church parishioner Jan Golann was helping to plan the church’s bicentennial celebration when she learned about the instrumental role that it played in the founding of NCS.

After becoming more involved with NCS over the coming years, Jan joined the NCS Board of Directors in 2017 and later became Secretary and a member of the Executive Committee.

Last year, when NCS’s NextGen Network launched the NextGen Innovation Award to support the work of an emerging leader who is advancing creative approaches to homelessness, her family’s Fullgraf Foundation endowed the annual $5,000 award.

Earlier this year, plans were underway to engage St. James’ parishioners in volunteer activities at NCS programs. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put these plans on hold. This didn’t stop Jan. When she returned to NYC in June, she joined her friend and fellow St. James’ parishioner Faith Fraser at the Monday Night Hospitality Program at All Souls Unitarian Church. Faith had connected All Souls with NCS at the start of the pandemic and was happy to have Jan help her each week to pick up meals set aside for NCS and deliver them to the Residence, our long-term, supportive housing facility on the Upper East Side.

“Jan is the ideal board member,” shared NCS Chief Executive Officer, Ann Shalof. “She cares deeply about our clients, our work, and our organization. She is thoughtful, insightful and full of creative ideas. She’s an enthusiastic supporter and is always ready to contribute in every possible way.”

Thank you so much, Jan for your continued support as a donor, board member, and volunteer!

Homelessness in New York City is on the rise, and COVID-19's impact on the crisis will continue long after the pandemic ends. The entire social services sector, from how we shelter people without a home to how we safely run free meal programs, needs to be re-envisioned. Creative solutions have never been more important.

We’re looking for problem solvers to share creative approaches to homelessness for the 2nd annual NextGen Innovation Award.

Please share news of the award with your friends, family, colleagues, and social media networks.

Last year, NCS launched the NextGen Innovation Award to stimulate and encourage creative solutions to the challenges of homelessness. The inaugural $5,000 award was presented to the Streetlives team.

Applications are due by October 30th, 2020.
Help NCS clients join the labor force this Labor Day!
NCS provides housing and supportive services including vocational, educational, and employment help for individuals with little to no employment history and significant barriers to employment.

But once we help our clients get into school, schedule a job interview, or land a job they still need a way to get there. And many of our clients are still taking public transportation to get to work during the pandemic.

Consider sponsoring metrocards for NCS clients—help them take one more step (or subway ride) toward independence.

Consider donating:
  • $6.00 covers the cost of a roundtrip MetroCard for a resident to get to and from a job interview
  • $33.00 for a weekly MetroCard so that a client can attend classes
  • $55.00 to allow 10 residents to interview for positions
  • $127.00 for a monthly MetroCard once a client has secured a job

Labor Day honors the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws, and well-being of the country.

Celebrate by paying it forward.

Thank you so much to the extraordinary people who stepped up during the COVID-19 pandemic and volunteered to pick up food donations downtown from New York Presbyterian Hospital and deliver them to our Upper East Side Residence. Because of you, our residents had access to fresh and reliable meals during the pandemic!

And of course thank you to New York Presbyterian Hospital for donating the meals. Your months of support gave our residents and staff stability during a time of uncertainty.
