Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter | January 2022
Neighborhood News January 2022
Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter (NCS) mourns the passing of Alice Greif. A dedicated community member, Alice remained an NCS board member for more than 35 years, until her passing earlier this month. Her ongoing devotion to our organization reflected her deep commitment to helping those in need improve their lives.

We will miss her compassion, wisdom, and feistiness. We extend our condolences to Alice's family, including her niece and our dear friend Megan Newman.

Christmas is always an exciting time at NCS. Before the pandemic, our traditions included decorations, talent shows, and big holiday meals together. When the recent COVID surge forced us back to social distancing, NCS staff stepped up to ensure that our clients still had a merry holiday.

To start the season, masked residents spread out to help staff trim the trees and hang decorations with holiday music and movies on in the background. Louis Nine House hosted a visitor from the North Pole, Louise Nine, the Elf on the Shelf, who made the rounds to surprise staff and residents. (Check out Louise’s highlight video below.)
A few days before Christmas, Louise Nine (Ann Shalof, CEO) and a fellow elf (Pearl Chin, Director of Finance and Administration) surprised staff and tenants when they visited every NCS site to deliver treats and spread holiday cheer!

Since we weren’t able to gather for a large community celebration, we planned socially distanced festivities, including each Louis Nine House resident ordering from our special holiday menu for a personal grab-and-go meal.

Even with efforts by NCS staff to brighten the holidays, some residents struggled. Options Vocational Specialist Elaine Gorsline shared that several tenants expressed feelings of loneliness and stress. “We provided them with a safe space to explore their talents and provided advice... on the importance of self-care, self-worth, and mental health.”

The holidays this year came with some challenges for all of us. But NCS’s staff worked hard to engage our residents and make sure that everyone had a festive time.
Now through March 31, Target shoppers can vote for a non-profit organization to receive a donation from Target. The more votes NCS gets, the more money Target will donate to us!

HOW TO VOTE:
  • Go to www.target.com/circle and log into your Target account to see how many votes you have (every time you've made a purchase, you've earned a vote).
  • Once you're on www.target.com/circle you will see a section called "Community Support"— that's where you go to vote for NCS. And you can give NCS all of your votes!
  • For NCS to come up as a voting option you will need to set your "My store" location to a Manhattan store. (The option to do that is in the account menu at the top right of the site.)

You get more votes with every purchase, so be sure to check back regularly to make sure you're using all your votes!
