Neighborhood News July 2021
NCS's Community Human Services Information and Referral Program (CHIRP) provides information and referrals to those in need of but disconnected from services— and it's now available by phone!

Previously NCS's social worker visited meal programs on the Upper East Side to answer questions, help locate resources, and provide referrals for services. During the pandemic, when this in-person service became impossible, we started offering a toll-free phone number to serve inquiries from all five boroughs. We recently added a second social worker to provide services in Spanish and English.

Click here to download printable CHIRP information cards and share them with those in need or email Rebecca to request pre-printed cards.

Thank you to City Council Member Ben Kallos for supporting this effort.
The Futures Fund helps our young adult residents overcome obstacles blocking their paths toward education, employment, and independent housing.

Some residents have already received a scholarship for school but need money for textbooks or transportation. Others need help paying for the licensing exam required by their chosen profession. And others are ready to move out of NCS housing and into their own apartment but need help with the security deposit.

This fund is the difference between "I wish I could" and "I can!"

Join us this July and continue the "independence" themed celebrations: support the Futures Fund and help an NCS client take the next step toward an independent life.
The NCS Residence has had two in-person BBQs for fully vaccinated residents!

On June 11th, at a belated Memorial Day BBQ, residents enjoyed chicken wings, BBQ ribs, corn, potato salad, watermelon, pie, ice cream, and most importantly, EACH OTHER!

Residents came together again for hot dogs and hamburgers on July 9th to celebrate Independence Day.

We are truly feeling the freedom.

Thank you to The Brick Presbyterian Church Women’s Association for donating new banquettes for our dining room right before the pandemic. We are thrilled to finally be able to enjoy them!
On June 15th, Shaun Donovan, a candidate in the 2021 NYC mayoral Democratic primary election, toured the NCS Residence to learn more about the work we’re doing at NCS. He then stayed and made pasta and meat sauce for all of the residents.

During the Obama Administration, Donovan served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Prior to that, he was the Commissioner of the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development from 2004 to 2009 under Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
